Editorial Reviews

2010 four CD box set from one of the most heralded British singer/songwriters of the Rock era. I Want My Crown is littered with rarities and unreleased material: b-sides, outtakes, live performances and BBC session tracks, combining to make this the definitive examination of Kevin Coyne s career on Virgin during the '70s. Compiled by Coyne s sons, Eugene and Robert Coyne and featuring quotes from their father, friends and fellow musicians, this box set chronicles a vital period in Kevin Coyne s career, one of the most fascinating and forthright artists of his time. Features selections from all Coyne s Virgin albums, including two Benelux only collections, plus singles like 'Lorna'/'Let s Have A Party', presented for the first time on CD, unreleased sessions, a BBC In Concert from 1974, the Hyde Park show from the same year, unreleased performances for Rockpalast in Cologne, and more. It is unlikely that anyone other than a Coyne fan will be giving a whole lot of thought to buying a 4 CD anthology, so the question at hand is - is this worth it (the price, the time commitment, the energy)? Umm...yes, it is. Kevin's sons Robert and Eugene have compiled a wonderful anthology that blankets his Virgin Records years beautifully and powerfully. The track listings are posted above, so I'll not bother dwelling, but the previously unreleased, or very difficult to find tracks run from pleasing to revelatory and if you consider yourself enough of a fan, admirer or appreciator to be interested, then you owe it to yourself to delve this much farther into KC's body of work. And you owe it to him to give a listen not only to your old favorites, but to the songs and performances that time and the marketplace left unavailable until now.

Should you be new to Coyne, listen to the samples here and on his other records - you'll know right off - and if you like, this is still a stellar purchase.

Years ago, I wrote that Kevin Coyne is one of those rare measuring sticks against which all popular music that seeks to do more than merely entertain needed to be compared. That has not changed in the 30 years since. This is deeply moving, provoking and, indeed, entertaining stuff. Not for everyone, obviously, but for me, and maybe you, too.

I can't stand it anymore, so I'm reviewing this set, trying to bring some light onto someone deserving-Kevin Coyne. This should be more well known. Short and simple-Kevin Coyne is never going to receive the accolades for his song writing and performing that he deserves. Always more well known and respected in England/Europe, in the U.S. he's virtually unknown. In Europe Coyne has over two dozen albums to his name, while in America there's only a few available. Too bad.

Coyne essentially began his musical career (if you could call it that) in the band SIREN, who released two good albums on John Peel's Dandelion label in 1969-70. These are now available in expanded 2 discs (each) sets for fans like me. I still own the band's first vinyl album ("Siren") on the Dandelion label, I purchased in 1969 as an "import" album. Ever since then I've hoped it would be reissued on CD with extra tracks, and finally, one of my small musical prayers has been answered.

But this set is after SIREN dissolved, and Coyne went solo. The tracks come from the 1970-1980 period, with many tracks from his best years in the mid 70's. Included are songs from his albums "Marjory Razor Blade", "Blame It On The Night", "Let's Have A Party", "Matching Head And Feet", "Heartburn", "In Living Black And White", "Dynamite Daze", "Millionaires And Teddy Bears", "Bursting Bubbles", and "Sanity Stomp". Also included are Singles, unreleased tracks, BBC radio cuts, the musical "England England", "The Virgin Song Sampler", live tracks-including an entire disc of live sets from BBC in Concert at Golders Green in 1974, and a set from Hyde Park, also from 1974.
