This review is from: I Want To Speak Russian (Hardcover)
Ms. Lelchuk's book is a wonderful introduction to the Russian language. It quickly familarizes the student with the Cyrillic alphabet, numbers, days of the week, months, seasons, colors, and simple dialogues which form a foundation for learning more complex vocabulary and gramatical structures. Vocabulary and grammar are presented through very original and humorous stories which not only give the student a unique overview of Russian culture, but also prepare the student for conversations with Russian-speaking people and traveling in Russia. My husband and I have both used this book and put it to practical use in our travels in Russia. The first time we traveled to Russia without a tour guide, we were amazed at the accuracy and usefulness of the sections of traveling in Russia. When we arrived in the Magadan airport and looked around the terminal, we felt as though we had been transported into a lesson from the textbook: the signage, announcements, customs inspection, check-in process, boarding, etc. were so faithful to the lessons it was almost surreal! Best of all, although Russian grammar is complex, Ms. Lelchuk presents it in such a manner that it is easy and painless to learn -- it becomes second nature without the need to memorize complex rules.
