Book Description

June 7, 2012
Julianne counts the days until she can pack her bags and leave her old-money, tradition-bound Southern town where appearance is everything and secrecy is a way of life. A piano virtuoso, she dreams of attending a prestigious music school in Boston. Failure is not an option, so she enlists the help of New England Conservatory graduate Isaac Laroche to help her. She can't understand why he suddenly gave up Boston's music scene to return to the South. He doesn't know her life depends on escaping it. Julianne must face down madness from without, just as it threatens from within. Isaac must resist an inappropriate attraction, but an indiscretion at a Mardi Gras ball-the pinnacle event for Mobile's elite-forces their present wants and needs to collide with sins of the past. Will Julianne accept the help she's offered and get everything she ever wanted, or will she self-destruct and take Isaac down with her?

More About the Author

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

On her thirtieth birthday, she mourned (okay bawled) the fact that in no way could she still be considered a "young adult," so she rebelled by picking up Twilight and promptly fell in love with Young Adult literature.

She has a love/hate relationship with Mardi Gras -where does all that money come from?-and can sneeze 18 times in a row.

WoW! That was INTENSE!

I think this review will have a few confessions in it. For example... I confess that prior to this book being released I was drawn immediately to the cover. I confess that I passed on it because books like these are the reasons why I also hate to watch the news; hate to be emotionally and mentally beat up (the real world can be ugly). I confess that I hate to see people suffer and although the characters in this book are fictional, it had the possibility of it all being too real. I confess that I broke down and read the book because I wanted to be part of this wonderful tour. I confess that my initial predictions of this book being all too real... were true. AGH!

"If you want vampires and werewolves, faeries, fallen angels or zombies, you won't find them here. I know a real-life monster. She drains the life out of me and tears at my flesh with words and fingernails that sink deeper than fangs ever could. I'm not her only victim, just her favorite. "

That, my dear friends, is the opening paragraph and it set the mood for the rest of the book.

Julianne is a piano virtuoso, whose dream is to attend the New England Conservatory in Boston. Her life, already a bit complicated, spirals into a whole other complicated when she begins to be tutored by the mysterious Isaac Laroche, another piano virtuoso.

This was a brilliantly written story that ebbs and flows, taking twists and turns and not once would you have imagined that it could have been possible. It takes a broken young lady, breaks her some more and then slowly allows her to mend. It speaks of a first love between a girl and her music, a girl and herself, a girl and a boy. It speaks of the complexities of family, community, wants and needs and everything in between.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Won't Want to Put it Down June 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Want is much more than a story about a teenage girl trying desperately to escape her home life and get into the college of her dreams. This book takes you into Julianne's world, a place with colorful characters, romantic drama, deep southern traditions and laugh out loud dialogue.

I was team Julianne from the beginning. Of course I wanted her to find love with Isaac or Dave, but I really wanted her to truly love herself. She is constantly told what a beautiful person and amazing pianist she is, but in her opinion she is never good enough. As you learn more about the relationship she has with her workaholic father and malicious mother, you begin to see to the root of Julianne's personal seclusion and secret pain.

Want is a book you won't be able to put down. Admittedly, I am not a huge romance fan, but Want is darker than romance, it is a coming of age story of with twists that you don't see coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting YA Contemporary Romance June 7, 2012
By Lisa
Format:Kindle Edition
I stayed up until 2AM reading this book. Then, I thought about it all day and rushed home after work to finish reading it. It's been some time since I've been so compelled by a book that I was unable to put it down, so I'm thrilled to share this review with you.

The main character in Want is Julianne, a complex, interesting and immensely talented seventeen-year-old. She faces a horrific home life, the psychological impact of which made her a very real and believable character. Her relationships were highly complex, and with her absent-yet-in-the-house father, her mentally ill mother, and her beloved brother away at college, Juli is truly alone. Whisked into making adult decisions, she must learn to fight for herself to go after her dreams.

It was the love triangle in this book that had me turned inside out. I was enticed, frustrated, caught up, and even a bit wary, at times, of the direction things were heading. I oscillated between being on Team Isaac and Team Dave, both of whom were gorgeous in their own way. Right up to the end of the book, I wasn't sure which side I was on, because I had empathy for both men and understood her attraction to them, despite the taboo of the age differences. I even held my breath a few times as she made some tough choices in what felt like a very intense and yet profoundly realistic story.

This story opened my eyes to how exciting contemporary YA romance can be.

Julianne has worked hard her entire life, practicing her piano to get into New England Conservatory, to leave behind the abuse, depression, and dysfunction of her southern home. When her teacher falls ill, she meets Issac, his young nephew and a recent grad of the same school she desires so much. The only problem is, she starts to desire Issac as well. His brooding mystery lures her in. She's not the only one with psychological problems.

As a professional musician that once auditioned at the New England Conservatory myself, I found this story to be very interesting and very real. The main character, Julianne is moody like your average teenager, but as the story progresses, you start to learn why. She has some big problems: an abusive mom, a distant dad, an urge to cut her arms to feel pain and release, and the possibility that she's inherited her mother's psychotic traits. She is a very brave girl who stands at the edge of an abyss. Only music can save her, but can she overcome her emotional difficulties to become a great pianist, or will it all end in a tragic train wreck?

Issac is a mystery that I kept turning pages over to solve. Why did he leave the prestigious music scene in Boston? How does he feel about his new student, ten years his junior? When the truth finally comes out, it's shocking! Boy, did it keep me reading. Phew! The relationship between Julianne and Issac is tumultuous, yet they can teach each other so much. As Mr. Cline puts is so eloquently when talking to Julianne, "You are the student he needs and he is the teacher you need."

Dave is another story, so sweet, hilarious, if not a little potty mouthed, and always there for Julianne. I wondered if she'd ever see him for who he really was. The love triangle kept me turning page after page!
