"Wanted" is one of those CD's you want to like a lot, but there is just enough irritating debris scattered throughout that it keeps it from being a really great CD. 3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhere maybe
The guy has an awesome voice, you have to give him that. However the opening track "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is not entirely convincing. The rhythm track sounds canned, for one thing. The whole thing is loosely based on Iz's version, and Louis's clearly. But it just doesn't quite come together. There is too much automation, not enough emotion. I bet Cliff can do...

"Wanted" is one of those CD's you want to like a lot, but there is just enough irritating debris scattered throughout that it keeps it from being a really great CD. Cliff's desire to re-record some of these classic songs is admirable, and it really works on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World." Somehow the "pop" approach adds to the ethereal essence of both of these classics. "All Shooks Up's" inclusion of Cliff's "Devil Woman" is also catchy and a nice change of pace from the frantic delivery usually given to this song. Sometimes the arrangements don't work well at all, particularly on "You've Got a Friend" and "Moon River." I agree with another reviewer who felt the synthetic orchestration is not as effective as an orchestral or "real" instrumental background. I Don't think "Right Here Waiting" is one of the songs that should be on this CD either. While Richard Marx is a talented singer/writer, this song is not one of his best, even though it was a huge hit. Cliff doesn't really do much with it. The only new song that is memorable is "Do You Wonder". So, why did I give it four stars? Amazingly, it's because in spite of these flaws, Cliff's voice (at the incredible age of 61) is still rich, evocative, and commanding. He sings better now than he ever has, and that's something to be said for this unsinkable icon. Cliff Richard fans should like this for that reason alone. If you're not familiar with Cliff, go back to his earlier albums, such as "I'm Nearly Famous" for hearing him at his vintage best!

4.0 out of 5 stars Over The Rainbow, November 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Wanted (Audio CD)
This is Cliff's first release of all new recordings since his year-long sabbatical in 2000. It has a different feel from many of his lushly orchestrated 80 and 90s albums. There is a stripped down feel to the music and heavier rhythms are used in the forefront. For the most part, the music simply serves as a frame for that incredible voice. The lead track is an unusual arrangement of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" with "What A Wonderful World" that really works! (...) An excellent CD. My only criticism is with the engineering in a few places. In a those places, the background is a bit too thick and threatens to muddy the sound. Cliff's powerful and crystal clear vocals is what saves those moments. Most other singers' voices would have been swamped. That's the only reason I can't give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year, November 16, 2001
This review is from: Wanted (Audio CD)
A truly fantastic album from a truly fantastic artist. This album is a must for any Cliff fan, and would be avery nice CD to have in anybodys collection. The album consists of 10 cover tracks from artists such as: The Everly Brothers, The Beatles and Elvis, which have been completely recomposed, to add a modern feel. Although the album mainly consists of cover tracks, there are three new tracks, which includes "Let me be the one" which is to be the second single taken from the album, the first being "Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world". A truly wonderful album from that will have you entertained for months, definately one to leave in the CD player.

5.0 out of 5 stars More great music from Cliff Richard, September 3, 2009

This album of remakes, done in Cliff-Richard-style is wonderful! I didn't know what to expect, but Cliff doesn't disappoint. His rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow mixed with "What a Wonderful World" is one of the best. He also does a great cover of a Tina Turner classic, and so much more. Well worth buying this! Unfortunately Cliff Richard never experienced the fame in the U.S. that he achieved in England, but it's easy to see why the Brits love him. The entire CD is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the all time best singers- New CD, May 2, 2003

This is the 1st album of Cliff in the new century, his voice sounds very good as always. Most these songs are cover versions, I only distinguish 2 originals. My fave are: "Somewhere Over the rainbow/What a Wonderful World", old standards together, to which Cliff Richard very well gives a modern sound for the present times, preserving the beautiful essence of the originals; the same for "Moon River", I'd rather like a fully orchestrated version though, I feel the luck of real instruments, technology is not able to replace that luck of a real great orchestration; all in all it's also a good cover version; I like very much his rendition of Jackie DeShannon's "When you walk into the room", and Everly's "Like strangers". Covers of Elvis' and Beatles' songs are somewhat too obvious, he could have done better choices.

Mid 80's "What's Love Got To do with this?" is still too related with Tina Turner, and the 70's already-many-times-covered "You've Got a Friend" is and will always be closely related to Carole King and/or James Taylor.

Looking for songs to cover, no doubt the 60's is the richest decade of all, there are many excellent songs that today are forgotten/unknown or not very identified with any particular singer/band.

His 2 originals in this CD are good songs, and all in all this is a very good CD, Cliff Richard is actually a true artist with a longest and deserverdly successful career in pop music. I celebrate his recording of "Wanted" and wait for more to come.

1.0 out of 5 stars UNWANTED!!!, November 28, 2004
This review is from: Wanted (Audio CD)
Cliff has always been one of my favorite singers and I own almost every album he 's released. As for "Wanted", I was very excited when I first saw it and bought it right away...only to regret not lisening to it first. The tracks were heavily produced (using too many instruments and unnecessary background vocals) and every song sounds the same. This version of Elvis' classic "All Shook Up" stands out as the worst of this bad bunch. The whole album sounds like some cheap stuff from the 80's. What was Cliff thinking? It 's just very bad and very disappointing!!!

A beautiful romantic cd. A most for Cliff Fans. My personal favorite song on here is Like Stranges. Only song I don't like is Moon River. I don't care who sing that song. I have never like it. All Shook Up wondering done with a touch of Devil woamn in it. Right Here Waiting, Richard Marx's song, Cliff does a softer touch to it. Let Me Be The One, Written by Chris Eaton. A very gifted songwriter. Wondering sang by Cliff.Do You Wonder another great song Written by Alan Tarney. I really enjoy this cd. Was glad to pre-order from here.

2.0 out of 5 stars mild monotony, December 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Wanted (Audio CD)
This album is pleasant enough, but it's weak. Few covers are better than the originals, and many of these sound really strange. Particularly disappointing is "Every Time You Walk In the Room." I couldn't help wishing some guitars were evident rather than the programmed accompaniment that dominates this album. Cliff whispers his way through all the tracks. It was not a good idea to team up with Alan Tarney again. He needs to team up with Bruce Welch and see if he can work a miracle similar to the one they pulled off in the late 70's. Cliff's had an amazing career since 1958 (yes, he really is 61) and doesn't seem to be your typical hedonistic star, but this album is a disappointment.
