5.0 out of 5 stars Wanted: Cowboy, July 3, 2000
This review is from: Wanted: Cowboy (The Rose Tattoo, Book 10) (Harlequin Intrigue Series #522) (Mass Market Paperback)
Kelsey Roberts shifts from her Rose Tattoo series to her new Landry Brothers with "Wanted: Cowboy." Advertising executive Barbara Prather has decided to host a party for a prospective advertising client in hopes of getting his business. There doesn't seem to be much chance of that when the guest of honor is murdered in the middle of it. As the only witness, the police are concerned her life is in danger. Against her will, rancher Cade Landry carries her off to his Montana ranch to protect her. Cade really makes Barbara's blood boil. Too bad it looks like she'll have to depend on him, especially when his ranch turns out to be less safe than they imagined.

I never know what to expect from Kelsey Roberts, whose books can strike me as excellent ("His Only Son"), atrocious ("Her Mother's Arms") or somewhere in between ("Unforgettable Night"). I put off reading "Wanted: Cowboy" for nearly a year because of that uncertainty. It was well worth the wait. In terms of the story, this is the author at her best.

I may be alone in thinking that Rose planning an Elvis-themed party for Barbara's presentation was more thoughtless than amusing, regardless of the end result. For me, the first chapter was grating. In general, though, the humor and fast dialogue that makes her books unique are in place. What moves it to another level though, is the strength of the mystery and the romance. The mystery is successful and the ending so surprising because Roberts drops clues in a clever way that doesn't seem like they're relevant to the mystery. Unlike some books where I instantly spot relevant information, "Wanted: Cowboy" is expertly crafted. I may have guessed who the villain was, but not the motive. I love it when a book can catch me off guard. This was one of them.

I also enjoyed the way the relationship between Barbara and Cade's teenage daughter was developed. Barbara was a very strong romance heroine in general, Jess was a nicely portrayed, realistic teenage character, and the way all the relationships built and grew was well done. A sexy romance, plenty of suspense and a strong mystery make this one of Roberts' best. An excellent book.

Kesley Roberts really knows how to kick off a new series! What an ingenious concept! Funny, witty, a really good read. Loved the by-play with the spoiled teenage daughter and the confusion with the Elvis impersonators. Such fun.

The book was a wonderful blend of humor and suspense. If this is a preview of what's to come in the Landry Brothers Series, readers of Intrigues have a lot to look forward to. This book is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS OPENING & ENGAGING CHARACTERS, June 12, 1999

This review is from: Wanted: Cowboy (The Rose Tattoo, Book 10) (Harlequin Intrigue Series #522) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is Ms. Roberts cross-over book. It's kind of a blend of her great series The Rose Tattoo and her new series (announced in the back of the book) The Landry Brothers (starts in October).

The set-up for this story is priceless and utilizes this author's unique sense of humor. The hero, Cade Landry (apparently he's a cousin to her up-coming Landry Brothers), is attempting to save the heroine from a determined stalker. The stalker's identity is just too funny! Which is countered by serious moments between the heroine, Barbara Prather, and the hero's 16 year old daughter, Jess. Hopefully in a few years, Jess can have her own story. This girl was a delightful blend of insecurity and attitude.

As susal, the chemistry between the hero and heroine is flawless. The banter between the two is so realistic, it's amazing! The sexual tension is great and the sex is tastefully handled.

This book was worth waiting for and I can't wait until October to meet more of the sexy Landry Brothers!
