4.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson in "Acoustic Folkology", February 4, 2000
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive (Audio CD)
David Bromberg would probably have a hard time getting a record deal these days, which is a cryin' shame. This particular effort of his showcases him at his best - a wonderfully eclectic musical brew full of non-politically correct humour ("Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair"), mournful wailing ("Statesboro Blues"), and flat out great picking ("New Lee Highway Blues") - not to mention some fun cover versions of "Kansas City" and an obscure Dylan tune called "Wallflower". Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead and Alive, August 8, 2002

Someone should point out the obvious pun in the title of this album. The second half is from a live acoustic show, while the first half was recorded in the studio backed by most of the members of the Grateful Dead. These were two separate album sides back in the dark ages of the pre-CD era. Features some of his best tunes, including a remake of the catchy pseudo-mariachi number he co-wrote with George Harrison, "The Hold-Up", which originally appeared on Bromberg's self-titled debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars An assortment of Bromberg styles, June 14, 2000

Excellent album showcasing ecclectic musical tastes of Dave Bromberg. Just his solo, acoustic rendition of the medley 'Statesboro/Church Bell Blues'is well worth the price of this CD! Listen as he comes around for the 2nd chorus on 'Statesboro': you can actually hear the guitar sound like a freight train, as it builds a head of steam, while Dave belts out the lyrics. Turn this number up as far as you can stand it for full musical enjoyment! This is timeless music that you can listen to over & over again. Ironically, while he's at his best, you may understand why he was never 'popular': playing acoustic blues with a bit of 'country time', with his mournful, wrenching voice-- most people want something more urban, electric & processed. Bromberg is truly a unique artist. This album is a worthy addition to anyone who appreciates the real folk blues or the funky, full sound of Dave's big band.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have album if you like that folk blues scene!, March 16, 2009

This is a digitally remastered version of David Bromberg's 1974 release. It was one of my favorite albums back then and it has only aged a bit. The music is fun and energetic. No lovers lament here. Great blues and humor that makes each song a favorite. These days when most albums have one or two pretty good songs, it is nice to listen to an album where every one (except mayb Wallflower) is a nugget.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still good after all these years, September 27, 1999

This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive (Audio CD)
I bought this 8 Track (what the heck is that) when it was first released. It is as good today as it was back then. My kids even like it. I have been humming these tunes for years and couldn't remember where I first heard them, mystery solved. Instead of humming them now I remember the words. I wonder if there is anyone in the world that won't relate to "The New Lee Highway Blues".

5.0 out of 5 stars A great album from an obscure artist, July 2, 1998

I was first introduced to David Bromberg by attending a concert he gave at Central Park NYC in the early 80's. It stands today as one of the best shows I have attended and one with alot of memories. David's music mixes rock, jazz, blues, dixieland and folk. Hard to believe. It's fun roudy party type music if you have an open mind and do not mind listening to a fiddle mandolin song while waiting for a blues or rock song. Give it a try. His vocals are unique and grow on you

Inexpensive as dirt and just love the tracks on it. It's always entertaining. The person who gets their hands on this one after me is getting a real find.

4.0 out of 5 stars David Bromberg has his own style, January 24, 2011
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive (Audio CD)
I think this was Bromberg's first solo album, after he played with Jerry Jeff Walker and some others. He has a well deserved reputation as a great guitarist. Some of the songs here might be considered novelty songs. Bromberg is not like anyone else, and I suggest you listen to some previews here on Amazon, or either look up some vids online before buying. If you sort of like him at first, he will most likely grow on you, and you will come to love him later.

This is a near-classic collection of music that shows off Bromberg's musicianship in several ways. The interpretations of the tunes are still fresh, creative, and compelling. While no one would say Bromberg has a great voice, he used it deftly in over-the-top tunes like Sharon and Send me to the Electric Chair and more subtle pieces like Statesboro Blues. The musisicanship is cutting-edge for the time it was recorded, bringing together folk, blues, rock, and a little jazz into a well-performed set of tunes. Still love it! Thoroughly enjoyable many years after it's release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saddle Up, October 4, 2005
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive (Audio CD)
This is the kind of album for which you can easily round up a party posse or enjoy on your own. Intelligent and well-crafted, the music will work for the critical or casual listener.
Never one to take himself or his material too seriously, Bromberg focuses his considerable skills on the service of his songs and their character, and his enjoyment is unrestrained and infectious.
Today, Bromberg is the owner of a violin shop, and his live performances are sadly limited. But this album, while basically a studio recording, captures the breezy Bromberg style, relaxed and inviting. But don't get too comfortable, because when you're kicked back and least expect it, he really will take all your money.
