This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive: The True Story Of Harriet Tubman (Paperback)
I had this book when I was a child and I treasured it. This book introduced me to the life of Harriet Tubman, conductor on the underground railroad (she was so successful at helping people escape slavery that she had a price on her head), Civil War spy (an extremely dangerous undertaking when you consider that captured spies were executed), and servant to the poor. She instantly became my hero. The book is instructive without being preachy, and gave me a sense of Harriet Tubman's incredible strength of character, determination, and courage. In the pages of this book, I found a Great American. She has been a role model for me ever since I read this book. Consider giving this book as a gift to a child you love. The writing is easy to read, the illustrations are gripping, and the main character is a bona fide, real life, honest-to-goodness hero.

Wanted Dead Or alive,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive: The True Story Of Harriet Tubman (Paperback)
I think that Wanted Dead or Alive was a very good book, because it talked about how Hariet Tubman saved lots of lifes from slavery. Then she saved slaves from beng sold to a diffrent owner.I think that the big idea is that Hariet Tubman escaped from slavery and still went back for more slaves and then just to help them have a better life. Then she lived the rest of her life in freedom. I think this book was very intense book because it talked about how Hariet Tubman saved lots of slaves and still went back for more. I think that the book was cool.

I don't remember why I first picked this book up, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I introduced the book to my teacher, and he became so interested in it that he read it to the class. The next time the class went to the school library, they borrowed all the copies of this book - 10 copies in all.The author has a way of making the reader feel like he or she is in the story - if not as Harriet Tubman, then as someone close to her. With all the junk being fed to kids nowadays, putting a book of this quality in front of them could pique their interest in reading.

"Wanted Dead or Alive",
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive: The True Story Of Harriet Tubman (Paperback)
"Wanted Dead or Alive" The True Story of Harriet Tubman is a facinating book and may prove useful in a classroom setting. Ann McGovern's writing style is a mixture of narritive and expository and makes the book both engaging and educational. "Wanted Dead or Alive" is comprehensive and covers Harriet Tubman's entire life and her contributions to the Underground Railroad.

This book is avery good retelling of the story of Harriet Tubman. I enjoyed it very much. It tells about Harriet Tuban and how she escaped from slavery. Her master wanted her back very badly. He put up signs so that whoever found her would get a reward of 40,000 dollars. Even though most all of the white people that believed in slavery were on the lookout for her, no one ever found her. While she was helping a slave to escape, a master threw a weight at her. She had the scar forever.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive: The True Story Of Harriet Tubman (Paperback)
The book I am reviewing is Wanted Dead or Alive by Ann McGovern. It was a good book I recomend it to anybody. It was a book about a girl who helps free thosands of slaves. It tells how she grew up as a slave and how they used to whip her mostly all the time. They even make her take care of a baby and if it cries they would beat her and she was only seven. It also tells you how she escaped and came back to free alot of slaves. This book was also about how they used to work for hours and not even get paid.I think that the author wanted to tell people how everybody should have freedom and rights. Instead of trying to fight for it because every body deserves freedom. I also think that the author was trying to tell the readers that even one person can make a difference, just like Harriet Tubman did when she led thousands of slaves to freedom. The thing that I like about it is that I only had to read A little bit of stuff and I found out alot of stuff. The things that I like this book is that it was a very good story. The good thing about this book is that it is not fake. It is a true story and it is hard to amagine the African americans being kidnapped, then they had to be slaves, they had to be in others peopole control and they were already free. It was a good book and again I recomend it to anybody its an exciting book read it.

My 3rd grader likes fantasy and adventure, but I've been adding some non-fiction books to his reading list. I didn't know if Harriet Tubman would interest him, I wanted him to learn about her, so I gave this one a try.
It's WONDERFUL! It kept his attention and made him really care about what would happen to her. An adult could tell the author had done a great deal of research. There were direct quotes from Harriet herself and from what I could tell, every event in the book really happened. The book was so good that after reading it with my boy I ened up telling my wife about most of the amazing events it chronicled. Does your child have reading required for school each week? Get this one!

Wanted dead or alive,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Wanted Dead Or Alive: The True Story Of Harriet Tubman (Paperback)
It was in the year 1820. A babygirl was born. Her name was Harriet Tubman. She was born in Maryland. She was born in a cabin. The book is about slaves that are negros. And that they all lived in Maryland because there slaves. All the slaves were mistreated. The slaves needed freedom. The message is that you you should help other people that need your help. You should never give up on what you want. Like the slaves wanting to be free. My opinion, it was cool because the slaves were given called diffrent names. When they were older they were given another name. My opinion is that it is not good to have slaves. It was a good book. |
