This is an excellent tool kit for solving the mathematical problems encountered by undergraduates in physics and engineering. This second book in a two volume work introduces integral and differential calculus, waves, matrices, and eigenvectors. All mathematics needed for an introductory course in the physical sciences is included. The emphasis is on learning through understanding real examples, showing mathematics as a tool for understanding physical systems and their behavior, so that the student feels at home with real mathematical problems. Dr. Lyons brings a wealth of teaching experience to this refreshing textbook on the fundamentals of mathematics for physics and engineering.

Review

'... a compendium of explanations of applications of mathematics in physics, designed to be dipped into and to inspire thought ... once the book is opened, be warned, you are likely to be hooked ...'. Nigel Steele, The Times Higher Eduction Supplement

Book Description

This second book in a two-volume work introduces the mathematics needed for an introductory course in the physical sciences through understanding real examples. Mathematics is taught as a tool for understanding physical systems and their behaviour. The aim is to make the student feel at home with real problems by creating a toolkit through a wide range of examples. The approach is very succesful for undergraduates who find it hard to make the bridge between formal mathematical theory, and applications to real systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!!, April 28, 2004
This review is from: All You Wanted to Know About Mathematics but Were Afraid to Ask: Mathematics for Science Students (Paperback)
Louis Lyons makes mathematics come alive in his book, which is really helpful for physics students. He gives you practical applications of all those equations in math which make little sense at first.
Every chapter has very few problems at the end, but all are really good problems, which test your fundamentals of the chapter.
I recommend the book to anyone who likes Math, especially those who like it but find some parts of it boring.
I found it very useful for my IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) preparation too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Underline of Math in Applications, August 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It is inescapable that one will forget what one has learned in class - be that from F = ma to calculus to Gaussian Elimination. Nothing beats this book as a quick review to what you have forgotten for your advanced math - and not just a review, but to real situations that you will need that math - focus in actual engineering and physics problems. Another great charm of this book is that it is written with the intent to be easily read - not dry and as precise as possible "classical" textbook style.

The underline this is a great companion book for any advanced undergraduate and graduate students or post-docs / researcher. Anyway, if you think you have a rather silly math question and is afraid to ask, why not ask this book?
