A "Must Have"...for New Riders Fans!!,

What a treat!!!
If you're a New Riders fan, this DVD (plus CD)...is "a must have!" The playing is fantastic!! "Classic NRPS songs." Buddy Cage (pedal steel guitar)...is awesome. Sounds excellent, as usual. David Nelson (lead guitar & vocals)...is smokin' on his Telecaster ~ B-String Bender. The rest of the band...sound great, as well. "Job well done!!" Sound quality...is very good. It's really great, just to see & hear them...playing LIVE. They...sound excellent! Do yourself a big favor. Buy this!!

This performance by the New Riders was quite a surprise. These guys can still bring it after almost forty years. There are two original members left (although technically David Nelson is the only original member since Buddy Cage stepped in for Jerry Garcia on steel guitar early in the group's history), but the fill-ins do very well.
The venue is odd, it appears that there are about thirty people on hand at some turkey ranch in New York State. I grew up in the Bay Area and was able to experience several live performances by these guys in the 70s. This performance is just as good, if not better, that those very memorable shows. The missing piece is John Dawson, who wrote many of the original songs, but those songs are recreated here very well. I highly recommend this for NRPS fans.

This is newly-revived classic NRPS material with David Nelson and Buddy Cage. Fantastic sound quality in both the CD and the DVD. "Garden of Eden", the best cut on the CD, really rocks and has a message with contemporary relevance. A must-have for any NERP or deadhead or someone who just likes country rock.

This dvd was filmed at the Turkey Trot Lodge in New York. This is a small and intimate venue. You get a close-up look at the New Riders performing their songs. This is a very "laid-back" and relaxing dvd to watch. It contains excellent jam music, including great steel guitar work. The New Riders really jam it out on extended versions of Portland Woman, and In the Garden of Eden. They perform an encor performance of Pamana Red. If you like good smooth relaxing jam music to watch, you'll enjoy this one. Also, the dvd cover art is beatiful. Another bonus is the CD of this concert which is included in the package. This is a great dvd/cd combo.

A little sad ... but, just like me - things change when the clock ticks away. Seeing the band and the (sparse) crowd reminds me that what we left behind sure doesn't look like today. I guess a lot of us old hippies thought it would last forever ... romantic and naive. I love the music - I hate the clock.

I am possibly the world's #1 NRPS fan. I started seeing them when they opened for the Dead in the early 70's and own everything they have ever recorded. Without John Dawson, they have no singer.....period. David Nelson & Buddy Cage still play incredibly well, but the vocals are horribly weak. This DVD is actually lip synced. Not that it matters. I saw these guys about a year ago for the 1st time in many years and was really looking forward to a good show. Sadly, I was very disappointed. Instrumentally, they were very good, but the vocals.......ugh! Please Dave, find a singer who can do the John Dawson & Dave Torbert songs.

Wonderful that these lads are still playing this joyous music! Have loved 'em since the first LP all those years ago! Fab sound quality & special praise to bass player Ronnie Penque - in fact I would recommend watching / listening on headphones for total enjoyment! There is a touching moment when the guitarist sees a woman in the (rather sparse) audience with a child draped over shoulder & says, 'Ah I see we put the baby to sleep, that's good'!!! So refreshing to have this dvd as I'm too much of a dinosaur to listen to modern rubbish! Buy it!

If you are a NRPS fan I think you will love it. Even without some original band members they still sound great.

This is probably the worse concert video I own. I love the NRPS and have seen them live several times which is why I didn't give it 1 star. The video quality is fuzzy and it looks like I shot it myself. I cannot believe that the sound wasn't recorded in Dolby Digital. I have concert videos from the 70s that have a better quality production. This concert might be OK if you're looking at it on an old 19" tv with no external speaker system.
This quality would've been acceptable if it were priced around $6-$7. This is a grade B quality production and I am disappointed with it. |
