Just OK IMHO April 2, 2011

Glad I didn't wait to long for it's release. Story seemed almost as if the author rushed to get through it in order to complete the series.Having read Book #2 Bought: The Penniless Lady in this series (Gentlemen Of Fortune) I didn't like this one as much. The story just wasn't there for me. The character's were just ok. The backdrop of Singapore didn't do much for me either, I prefer England or a good Western. Certain things were questionable and bothered me. She supposidely didn't know the language very well in Book #2 and 5 months later she is semi-fluent, she is supposed to be his mistress yet is welcome in his home and exposed to his young daughter. Conveniently she meets the one and only survivor that remembers her brother on the ship he was on three years later. I can't exactly put my finger on it but it just didn't fit well together. It was another predictable story slow starting just didn't keep my attention. 3/4 of the way through I read only the monologue to just get through it. The epilogue wasn't as informative as I would have liked it to be either, I would have liked more about book #2 character's. This is one of those books that that sit on the fence with me, I'm not exactly sorry I spent the money but not exactly happy I did. Hope that helps I know it is a bit of a strange review but it is what it is. Enjoy if you do read it.

Hale's latest is a lovely historical in an unusual setting: Singapore. It's a wonderful story and the last of her Gentlemen of Fortune miniseries. The best part for me? The utterly gorgeous use of sensory detail. When the heroine arrives, the reader arrives with her and experiences all of the firsts - the scents, sounds and tastes of an exotic, foreign land. It made for an enchanting read that was just a little bit different from my usual fare.

Deborah Hale never disappoints. She always delivers a warm, emotionally rich story!

Different and great. June 25, 2011

When I bought this book I thought it would be the usual western romance, but it isn't at all. It gives the reader a lot of infomation about a new location. In fact, the location is on the other side of the world. Great love story!
