Book Description

September 1, 2003
This rare collection of wanted posters from the American West is a historical treasure. The book's nearly 150 original wanted posters, fugitive notices, and Pinkerton Agency circulars are supplemented by fascinated details about the technology of identification, the history of wanted posters, and the stories behind the crimes, which ranged from horse theft, safe blowing, train robbery, seduction, ''white slavery,'' and murder. Posters for notorious bandits such as Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, and the Sundance Kid are also featured.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Today's reader finds the wanted poster appealing out of curiosity about the past---about criminal types, personal characteristics, background stories. Delightfully, Wanted Posters of the Old West feeds that curiosity. It immerses the reader in instance after instance of startling derring-do. Moreover, it provides some case backgrounds---context---for the posters themselves. Who can resist? ---Dave Walter, research historian, Montana Historical Society

This review is from: Wanted!: Wanted Posters of the Old West (Paperback)
This is a great book featuring alot of very cool Copies of ACTUAL wanted posters found in a cellar of an old building. A great book to just flip through or to actually sit down and read as it features tons of stories about the people featured on the wanted posters. It becomes an even better value as it is priced under $20.

This review is from: Wanted!: Wanted Posters of the Old West (Paperback)
I bought this book after seeing some of the old posters in an old restaurant while following the Oregon Trail last year...it is fascinating to see the photos and descriptions of these wanted fugitives of the Old West. This book contains about 150 reproductions of the original old Wanted posters The descriptions are funny, quaint and in most cases, very subjective (e.g. "always has a mean look on his face"; "roman nose"; "uses expression 'I reckon' a lot"; "cheek somewhat swollen from toothache"). A great glimpse back in our history.

Great gift for anyone involved in law enforcement. Lots of great photos with fascinating details of criminals and criminal behavior. It is very interesting to note the identification techniques used at that time versus the technology of today's world. The wanted posters are way cool - scars, limps, personality quirks, skills, detailed mannerisms of all sorts- all are recorded. I can see me ordering another copy of this for my husband's office.
