A masterpiece record,
This review is from: Wanted (Audio CD)
One thing that annoys is when people criticize this album for not delivering more examples like 'The Only Way Is Up'. By no means was Yazz a one hit wonder and this album proves it from top to bottom and back - because 'Wanted' is a masterpiece in many ways - due to Yazz's optimistic personality pouring so much soul into it and pristine production (Mark Brydon, Rob Gordon, Youth, Coldcut and The Beatmasters need no special introduction unless you're too shallow a listener) that stands the test of time, beating so many of her rivals along the way, and it means to this very day.
'The Only Way Is Up' is the ideal and maybe a bit calculated kickstart to the album, considering the hit sensation Yazz created at the time (starting with her guesting on Coldcut's "Doctorin' the House"), but listeners have no fear - for the remaining material (and here's a true treasure box hidden behind the adorable acid-house teaser) is all made for your listening pleasure. Eclectic in itself, "Wanted" is a somewhat forgotten beauty, daring to flirt the clubbing scene (deserved hits - already mentioned 'The Only Way Is Up' along with 'Stand Up For Your Love Rights' and 'Where Has All the Love Gone?') with a number of templates - jazz ('Something Special'), hip hop ('Wanted on the Floor'), reggae ('Fine Time'), old school electro patterns ('Turn It Up', 'Systematic People') and even world music (that echoes in the amazing 'Got To Share') - altogether mixed into a truly delicious chocolate cake.

This CD was excellent I remember getting the UK version of this cassette which had two extra tracks yet this one still evokes memories of 1989.

Yazz has very nice singing voise with full of power. And tracks like "The only way is Up!" are among the best. Not a perfect album, but good groove sound from the late 80'.

I've loved this album since it came out in the eighties. Yazz is a very talented dance music diva who probably gets confused in a lot of minds with Yazoo, the British synthpop duo who were popular around the same time(I believe they had to call themselves Yazz in the U.S. due to legal reasons). She sings about themes like ending poverty, standing up for your right to love whoever you want, being positive, etc. It's too bad there aren't more singers like this around now. Her dance tunes are funky and fun, with a message. The best are "The Only Way Is Up," "Stand Up For Your Love Rights," and "Where Has All The Love Gone?" She performs some lovely ballads as well, the standout is "Fine Time" though "Got To Share" is also nice. If you enjoy an upbeat message and great dance tunes, check this out.

This is Yazz's first CD and includes all her UK No 1 Hits: Stand up for your love rights, Fine time and The only way is up. She started as the singer of Coldcut. With this album she turned into the 80s house-queen we know. Very good work.
