Refreshing Metalcore,
By N. Pierce (Southern Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: War of Ages (Audio CD)
Are you tired of all metalcore bands following the same boring pattern? War of Ages is the cure. Blending an intense hardcore crunch with blazing guitar leads and dynamic lyrics, these guys put the passion back in a genre that seems to have lost conviction. What you will NOT hear is emoesque choruses and weak guitars. The sound is beefy and muscular. The twin guitar leads are reminiscent of As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall, or All That Remains, but are refreshingly original. The overall songwriting is phenomenal and will keep your undivided attention through the whole disc. Just watch. This band will blow up and become huge. Check them out!! (And other Strike First/ Facedown bands like In Due Time, Bloody Sunday, and Brutal Fight)

Generic brutality with good soloing,

This review is from: War of Ages (Audio CD)
While I like War Of Ages' later works, their debut is, unfortunately, rather repetitive and generic, using loads of gallop-riffing as the main rhythmic tool. The lead work is decent and the solos are fairly good, but the same rhythmic and melodic ideas are employed song after song, especially during the verses and breakdowns. Most songs are slight variations of the following formula: chugging gallop riffs, alternating metalcore screams and hardcore/punk spoken word vocals, overlayed with semi-melodic lead guitar; the tempo then significantly slows down as a note is allowed to ring before beginning a long breakdown session in which the melody drops; the tempo rises as the solo then ensues, dropping back into another breakdown session at the end. This is a very breakdown heavy album, which is unfortunate only because of the slowed tempos and unoriginality of the breakdowns, compounded by the fact that the melodic segments demonstrate far greater aptitude. If you're just looking for some brutal music to accentuate your angst or are dedicated to listening to solely Christian artists, this may be a justifiable purchase, but those looking for sophistication, technicality, or songwriting may want to look elsewhere. Unless strongly in one of these camps, I recommend giving each song a listen, and just picking up the highlights.

I dont normaly like to throw around 5 stars, but this band can play. There not super fast or to snappy but they have great songwriting and very catchy riffs. They remind me a lot of a band called still remains mixed with shadowsfall and All that remains. Amazing from the first song to the last song. Its like one of those albums that every song is so good that you dont have to skip through to the next song. Theres only a few things that i think would make this band stick out a little more. If they soloed a little more and maybe experimented more a bit on the vocals they could come out with something a little more complex. Thats just what i think but they wouldint have to do any of that though these guys are off to a stunnig first album. You will here more of these guys in the magazines. If you like any of the bands i listed before you should then really like war of ages. Check them out there really worth it.

Proving Christian Music Doesn't Always Suck,
By hellrun "dustin" (wisconsin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: War of Ages (Audio CD)
I'm not one to usuaslly listen to any kind of christian music...period. I dont know, i just dont feel the need to listen to someone preach about a being that wwas never there for me when i needed them, and they have no reason to believe that there is a God in the first place.Anyway...........i was very impressed with this album and band. The music is heavy, not super fast, but mid-to-medium paced tempo, and the lyrics DO praise God, but are aslo pissed and angry at the same time. Vocally, the vocals are more old school hardcore thean newer-metalcoreish vocals, but still good and descent. Check em out if you wanna try something different. |
