Editorial Reviews

Award winning documentary by Robert Clem based on the classic novel about aerial warfare in World War I. Three young Americans, Elliott White Springs of South Carolina, John MacGavock Grider of Arkansas and Larry Callahan of Kentucky, enlist in the American Air Service and are loaned out to the British Royal Air Force in 1917. After training in England, they are picked to fly in a new squadron, No. 85, being formed by daredevil Canadian ace Billy Bishop. Shortly after reaching the front, Grider is killed while on a two man patrol with Springs. After the war, Springs publishes what he says is the diary of his friend. Only much later is it revealed that Springs, perhaps out of survivor guilt, had written much of the diary himself in memory of his dead comrade.

3.0 out of 5 stars world war 1 history of aviation, December 15, 2010

This review is from: War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator (DVD)
This dvd is probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. I like aviation history, so this was a needed part of my collection. This is based on the book, which was very popular in the 1930's. It does
have some real footage from world war one, which I particularly liked. The story of who wrote the book did not interest me as much as the footage of real aircraft.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing 5 Minutes of this on the Doc Channel inspired me to buy this., August 22, 2010

This review is from: War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator (DVD)
Seeing 5 Minutes of this documentary on the Doc Channel (Documentary Channel) inspired me to buy this. It was so beautifully made and such a well told story in that brief 5 minute glimpse that I had to see more and know more about these men. It was haunting. I had no idea that so much film existed from back then. I purchased the diary that this documentary is based on and then I purchased this DVD. I highly advise you do the same. They are both well worth your time. This DVD is filled with extra footage (or special features) beyond the documentary itself. I have yet to watch it all as there is so much there to watch but I look forward to it. You don't need any of my details about the documentary as they are already listed out for you on Amazon's website for you in detail. They describe for you what this DVD is about. I won't waste your time on that. Just know that it is worth your time to watch in my opinion. There is a great deal of video and photos along with helpful narration to guide you along. You will feel like you were along for the ride yourself by the end. I liked this so much I purchased a copy for my brother.
