I enjoyed this true story of an airman from another country who came to Britain, bringing with him a dog he found and rescued. The bravery and devotion of this dog tears at the heartstrings. I admire this man who saw the worth of this dog and committed to him. I wish more of us were like him.

A wonderful story of true devotion between humans and this courageous German shepherd. The fact that the story is based around wartime and tragedy the love and absolute determination from both the hero dog and his master shines through. A great read.

Based on the true story of WWII Czech airman Sergeant Robert Bozdech, Damien Lewis’s "War Dog" deserves to be savored, not given a mere cursory read. From the moment Robert’s aircraft is shot down over France where he discovers a month old German Shepherd puppy in an abandoned farmhouse, the action never stops and the lifelong bond between man and animal begins. Their escape from the farmhouse becomes a perilous one for German patrols abound; however, help soon arrives in the form of French soldiers who reunite Robert with some of his Czech comrades. It’s not long before the dog has won the hearts of this band of brothers who proceed to name him, Ant, in commemoration of their favorite aircraft, a Russian dive bomber designated, the ANT, by the Czech Air Force. As the Germans advance on France, Robert and Ant, along with some of the Czech flyboys, continue to face adversity. Comic relief presents itself, too, as the men attempt to smuggle Ant out of harm’s way. Then upon arriving in England England, the group becomes integrated into the RAF and fly many bombing missions against the Germans.
Over the course of the book, Ant becomes wounded in action, gets shot, experiences a near- crash landing and faces a possible parachute bailout…sans chute. "War Dog’s" best and most endearing moments almost always involve Ant and his love and devotion to his master. Such moments include Ant’s nightly bedtime check whereby he nuzzles the faces of the crewmen to be sure they are safe, present and accounted for. Another incident involves Ant’s stowaway effort to be near Robert on a bombing run putting both himself and his master in danger since they have to share an oxygen mask.
