" 'War Dogs' is an Unforgettable Learning Excperience",
By N. Newkirk (Reedley, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: War Dogs: America's Forgotten Heroes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am a seventh grade English teacher and every year my classes study a Veterans Day unit. This video teaches an aspect of the humanity of the American soldier that nothing else I can present teaches. This video is compellingly compassionate towards treatment of animals in general, and specifically towards each of the featured dogs and their handlers in Viet Nam. Many of my students weep during the viewing of the video and no matter how many times I show it, I am always moved to tears. This video is so well loved it "disappeared" this year and I am frantic to replace it. I simply cannot teach the Veterans Day unit again without the slant this video provides, demonstrating graphically the emotional toll the dog handlers paid and the homage they continue to pay, these many years later, to the dogs who accompanied them in the jungles of Viet Nam. This video is tremendously AWESOME.

After watching this program on the Discovery Channel I have to own a copy of this vidoe. Very moving video,I have watched many war documentaries but have never seen one that honored the War Dogs. I had no idea what an important roll Dogs played in saving many lives during the Vietnam War. Excellent, emotional piece of work.

War dogs will make you hug your dog and cry for all lost.,

After watching War Dogs, I snuggled with my 3 dogs and cried for hours for the brave K9's and their handlers. This was a very informative video, but it also captured the essence of why a handler and dog bond so well. Excellent work!

Why Is This Gem Not on DVD?,

Forgive me if I vent a little: How is it that a marvelous gem of a documentary like this still languishes on a dying format (VHS) while idiotic drivel like "MTV's Real World" or "Sex in the City" pop right onto DVD? It's an irony that some of the best things are just kept in the can somewhere in a dusty archive waiting for a building fire.

As a Nam Vet who , at times , depended on these 4 legged wonders of god, I highly recommend buying this movie. I have purchased it multiple times and given copies to Local K-9 officers, Prior Nam Vets , organizations, police departments and other individuals. Our handling of these wonderfull creatures was abismal and unnessarry. I have a copy that I watch a least once a week so that it reinforces the way I treat people and all creatures on this planet.
I am not a seller so heres the bet....If you buy, you'll share it and buy it again to give to someone else who needs to enlightend. The only thing that this movie needs is to be released in DVD......NOW! Pass a hanky please ! Remember ...Dog spelled backwards is GOD!

Incredibly Moving....................,
This review is from: War Dogs: America's Forgotten Heroes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this when it aired on cable a few years ago.
It is an absolutely essential piece of K9 military history, the K9/human bond and most importantly a long overdue tribute to man best friend serving side by side in combat. Some people "get it" with dogs and understand that they share with us certain emotions and qualities. Bravery, affection, friendship, fear, loyalty and so much more. The difference is that dogs have more of the good qualities in abundance than many people do. We are truly fortunate that they think so highly of us and are willing to serve us under the most incredible conditions. Unfortunately we don't show anywhere near the debt of gratitude that they so richly deserve. We can be such a self absorbed species...my hope is this film will help shed light on the incredible contributions some of our 4-legged friends have so selflessly given to us.

I'm a very big man and this movie made me cry.,
This review is from: War Dogs: America's Forgotten Heroes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I first saw this on The Documentary Channel and pretty much cried through the whole thing. I worked at a military K9 kennel in Japan in 2002 and those dogs are truly incredible. I think however, that trainers should not be rotated if they bond. I think they should work with the same trainer and retire together as well. It's a crime that they would ever be seperated like a parent from child and it bewilders me that the military should want to even play the part of seperating such solid bonds of friendship and thereby creating such profound sorrow. Military dogs are soldiers and not inanimate objects like the m-16 is. They should not be viewed as government property in certain intances and I think they should consider creating an application preocess for the trainers to pay for a replacement dog and retire with his dog in certain cases, dammit !!!

War Dogs, opens your eyes,
By
This review is from: War Dogs: America's Forgotten Heroes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I watched this video while in K-9 school at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas during a rain day. Generally, having a bunch of students watch a video unsupervised is a mistake, as no one would watch the video. This video ran for it's entirety with a quiet classroom, something that is rare from my experiences.
The narration of Martin Sheen is spot on. His voice draws you into the plight of the war dogs. Through out the video, they interview former dog handlers, who all cry as they tell the story of their dog. You will cry with them. At the end of the video, you will be angry at the bureaucracy of government when the final decision about the war dogs are made. I really wish that they would offer this VHS on DVD. I rated this 5 stars because you already know what you are getting when you buy VHS.

I am not one of the sellers; however, the folks from whom I bought this video were wonderful. I have seen this video on public TV and wanted a copy for personal reasons. I was a dog handler in DaNang, RVN, 1967-1968, and this production stands out above all the rest. I sincerely wish it were on DVD, but then we can't have everything ... unless we're in politics...or a banker...or a CEO. You may be able to tell that the '60's humor is far from gone from this old warrior/hippie. However, thank all of you who made procuring this video possible. I am forever in your debt. (Well, sort of. I did, indeed, pay for the video).

This is truly a historical review of K-9 units which served in Viet Nam. Unfortunately, the military leadership ignored their value and brought few
of them home. |
