War Double Feature: Battle Cry/Battleground is a good value for the

money. For those involved, gritty performances, good scenes of humor,

angst, and pain. I stumbled onto Battle Cry on Cable late over several

nights, and just couldn't get through the whole movie (what can I say?

3.0 out of 5 stars One out of two ain't bad.
I had Battleground on tape from TCM and knew it was good. I wanted it on DVD. I had heard Battle Cry was a good movie so I bought the 2-pack. Battleground is a great movie in B&W and has some of the best young talent in those days. It's a pretty good depiction of the war and its time period. Forget about Battle Cry. I have to work so I can buy these DVD's!!). So, I purchased it for

$10/US. The fact that "BattleGround" was an extra was a bonus in my book!

Finally, as my Dad was an World War II and Korea Army Infantry Man, I

know that he would have gotten "a kick" out of the close-order drilling

displayed in the movie. The guys in the scenes in both movies were on their job!!

My rating: Five stars!

Ok a bit dated as all these oldies are showing their era and limits of film back then.

But my mother dragged me at least 5 times to see Battle Cry in my PJ's in the 50's at
the local drive-ins. Seen it at least once on TV in the 60's. Husband never did see it
so this set is for him more than me. He's a wee bit older and has more appreciation for
that era I think and besides his Mom never went over the moon for this movie either:)))

A classic set for those who appreciate them.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Battleground" a Must-Have WW2 Classic, October 23, 2011

This two-DVD set contains a pair of films that really should should be included in any WW2 film library. While "Battle Cry" is an interesting film about a USMC unit at home and in the island fighting-Pacific Campaign, "Battleground" is the true classic in the double feature. Set in the awful European winter of 1944-45, it follows a group of 101st Airborne Division paratroopers as they battle the elements and overwhelming German forces to hold the critical crossroads town of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. In many ways, this movie seems to foreshadow the great Spielberg/Hanks HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," a modern classic viewed by millions.
Buying the two-DVD set turned out to be less expensive than purchasing "Battleground" by itself, so I would recommend this as the way to go. If you've never seen "Battleground," do yourself a favor, add it to your WW2 collection, and I believe that you'll be glad you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Clean, December 7, 2011

This is a very clean copy of the old World War II movies. Loved the movies when they came out, and if the pictures were bigger on the screen, I would have given them 5 stars. I had forgotten that the movies were that colorful when I went and saw them in person. Also more vivid than the VHS format movies. Highly recommend them if you like the movies.

(Someone fibbed) It was filmed in the fifties and looks like it. The color actually works against this film. It was so hard watching women with 1950's hairstyles and clothes, and houses furnished in 1950s style in a film that was supposed to be set in 1942 that I stopped watching it halfway through. Maybe I'll watch it again from the middle and see if the war scenes are better. I doubt it. At least the total cost for both was less than the cost of 1 DVD, so I don't feel as if I've been cheated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Battleground, February 22, 2007
This review is from: War Double Feature: Battle Cry/Battleground (DVD)
Even though much of Battleground was shot inside a sound-stage, there is the feel of what it's like to be an infantry rifleman, a mud-pounder, and in the worst of conditions: winter. Digging foxholes one after the other. Sleeping in them, eating in them, finding ways to eliminate one's human waste, the endless waiting, then engaging the enemy. The kill or be killed mind-set. The unnaturalness of the everyday life of a man in a foreign land having to kill people he doesn't know produces a surreal trance that every rifleman enters and finds hard to come out of (thousands never came out of that trance, and suffered their whole lives for not being able to "adjust" to non-war realities). The writer keeps just the right amount of humor going around. People in war use humor to keep from "going round the bend" - as they say in England. John Hodiak was always a solid actor (see Hitchcock's Lifeboat), and keeps centering the movie with his intelligence. And few actors could play a serious role with a lot of comedic moments better than Van Johnson (Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo). Battleground has the feel of soldering in WWII. Modern liberal societies need to be defended. Many do not like what it takes to defend a liberal society. See Battleground and you'll quickly get the feel of what it takes and learn how difficult it really is.

Both of these films are classics. The DVD's packaged as a set arrived in a timely manner and I have enjoyed them very much. Battleground even included a vintage cartoon as an extra.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price!, May 4, 2008
This review is from: War Double Feature: Battle Cry/Battleground (DVD)
This two movie set of WW11 films had very few dissapointments.
Battle Cry is a bit too stylish, but some fine acting by veterans James Whitmore,Aldo Ray & Van Heflin make it memorable.

Battle Ground is a gritty film filled with great actors and dialogue. With the exception of Van Johnson, all the performances were first rate. A must see for War Movies buffs. 5 STARS
