A reasonable intro to the war in North Africa,

Between 1941 and 1943, North Africa was the setting for an epic struggle between the British and the Germans, the latter lead of course by the legendary Erwin Rommel. Orginally, it had been the Italians who were taking on the British here, but after be severely whipped a number of times, the weak, poorly lead and equipped Italians looked as though they were on the verge of collapsing, thus exposing the "soft underbelly" of Europe to the British. The ensuing contest between the British and Germans saw the two forces driving one another back and forth across the North African coast until finally, due to several circumstances basically out of Romml's control, the Afrika Korps could no longer put up a fightand hence surrendered early in 1943. This book is not a particularly impressive work on this theater of the war, although it really isn't meant to be I guess. It is really just an overview, and for anyone who just wants to get a sense of the timeline of the the events in North Africa, it is a good book. One drawback is, however, that the book has no illustrations and therefore someone unfamiliar with the region (such as myself) will have some difficulty the movements of the forces and the location of many of the battles.
