Book Description

May 4, 2004
A masterpiece of the imagination, THE WAR OF THE FLOWERS is a truly epic novel that once again pushes the boundaries of fantasy fiction into new and unexplored territory. In the great city, in the dimly lit office of an impossibly tall building, two creatures meet. Gold changes hands, and the master of the House of Hellebore gives an order: 'War is coming. The child must die.' In our own world, a young man discovers a manuscript written by his great uncle. It seems to be a novel - a strange fairytale of fantastic creatures and magical realms. But it is written as a diary ...as if the events were real ...as if his uncle had journeyed to another world. For the young man, the fantasy is about to become reality. More About the Author

Former singer, shoe-seller, radio show host, and inventor of interactive sci-fi television, Tad Williams is now a full-time writer. His 'Memory, Sorrow and Thorn' series established him as an internationally bestselling fantasy author. The series that followed, 'Otherland', is now a multi-million-dollar MMO launching in 2012 from dtp/realU/Gamigo. Tad is also the author of the fantasy series, the 'Shadowmarch' books; the stand-alone Faerie epic, 'The War of the Flowers'; two collections of short stories ('Rite' and 'A Stark and Wormy Knight'), the Shakespearian fantasy 'Caliban's Hour' and, with his partner & collaborator Deborah Beale, the childrens'/all-ages fantasy series, the 'Ordinary Farm' novels. Coming in September 2012 are the Bobby Dollar novels, fantasy thrillers set again the backdrop of the monstrously ancient cold war between Heaven and Hell: the first is 'The Dirty Streets of Heaven.'

Tad is also the author of 'Tailchaser's Song': his first novel spawned the subgenre of cats and fantasy that we see widely today. 'Tailchaser's Song' is currently in preproduction as an animated film from Animetropolis/IDA.

I am so sick of Tolkien fantasy wannabes! this is what I find so refreshing aboutTad Williams. This book hands down is my favorite stand alone fantasy book ever. His fantastic interpretation of this fictional world is so refreshing in a world of Tolkien knockoffs. Keep them coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairiely Modern, October 12, 2008
Ok judging from the fact that there are no reviews about this book, I'm assuming it wasn't very popular. I really enjoyed this modernized telling of a modern fairy world. It starts off a little slow but like many of Tad's books there is an endless chase you just can't wait to read through. It was exciting and I highly recommend this book. I also am hoping that one of Tad's book will be made into a movie. I'm dieing to see how Hollywood would interpret his books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Williams proves here that you don't need 10 plus books to tell a compelling story..., January 27, 2011
This review is from: War of the Flowers (Paperback)
I first read this stand-alone book whilst waiting for the (still pending) conclusions to a couple of other well known fantasy author's multi-book stories. Essentially what Tad Williams does here is tell the central story with a gratifying level of intricacy and depth without any unnecessary sub-plots. It was refreshing to hold the whole story in the one book, finish it, and be very happy with the author's delivery and the scope of his tale.

Also, from a personal point of view it was nice to read a central character who was believably "human", not possessed of fantasical abilities, utterly pure of spirit or fated to conquer.

All in all well worth the sticker price.
