War Goddess 1974 R

Amazon Instant Video

(19) IMDb 4.7/10

Gorgeous Alena Johnston is Antione, the War Goddess of the Amazons, who must mate with the Greek king Theseus to propogate her race. Traditionally this is done only out of duty, but this time she falls in love with her "boy toy"... a definite no-no for an Amazon queen. Helmed by James Bond director Terence Young and based on a story co-authored by Robert Graves (I, Claudius), this sexy and spectacular entry in the sword-and-sandal genre features an incredible bevy of Euro-cult starlets including Rosanna Yanni (Frankenstein's Bloody Terror), Helga Line (Horror Express) and Luciana Paluzzi (Thunderball), plus a lyrical score by Academy Award-winner Riz Ortolani (Mondo Cane).

WAR GODDESS

I have watched a lot of amazon movies (Battle of the Amazons, Gold of the Amazon Women, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death) and War Goddess stacks up as one of the better ones I have seen. However, I don't know if that says a whole lot for this genre. Admittedly, this movie is pure camp, but very fun if you like these kinds of movies. And plus it has a lot of pretty girls running around all over the place.

In this particular amazon village, in order to become an amazon, you have to first prove yourself by cutting off the head of a male. The amazons generally don't associate with men unless it is breeding time, which only comes at one particular time of the year. Kind of fun to watch the male protagonist of the film, a Greek character, attempt to sweettalk the Amazon Queen--while she remains steadfast in her hatred and utter disgust with men.

I should point out that this movie is not suitable for all ages. For example, there is a scene where barebreasted amazons fight in a dirt ring in order to be the next queen. There also appears to be some scenes that are a little disjoint in the story flow -- leading me to suspect that perhaps some scenes were cut out. But it's not going to effect your overall satisfaction with this movie.

The dialogue is also surprisingly good. And I take it that is because this movie comes from an era where you had to sell your movie on "story" and "dialogue" because cheesy special effects could not cut it. I would say if you like these types of movies, this one is certainly worth a look.

WAR GODS OF BABYLON

I found this to be a decent movie, I suppose. I'm not sure how it relates to the title on the front of the box: "When women ruled the earth.

I truly enjoyed both of these gems. War Gods is a historical epic depicting Babylonian conflicts. Political, intriguing, action packed and quite realistic, War Gods is topped off by a guest appearance by the Great Zoroaster! Loved it. War Goddess is even better! Sexy Amazonian women, superb stunts, nude goddess wrestling and realistic action make this one of my favorites. If anyone in Hollywood still has a brain cell left they would make a movie like this. No CGI, no wire work, no top A list actors or actresses, just sexy epic action with real stunts and tons of good costumes and thousands of extras. Make it sexy and realistic like War Goddess' and you'd have a winner. In the mean time check this one out. My girlfriend and I loved em both. A refreshing treat contrasted with todays overslick ,over digitized plastic puke hollywood is spewing these days.

The nude catfight is the main reason anyone would want this movie, but that scene has had a full minute chopped off at the end, in my opinion the most sensual minute of the whole film. Whoever censored it has seriously reduced the desirability of this DVD. A full, uncensored print of this film would be so welcome, but this is not it.

I haven't seen any of the Italian sword and sandal movies for many a year so I thought I'd give these a shot seeing as it was a two for one deal. Well.......it wasn't half bad. Wasn't half good either.

War Gods of Babylon was pretty awful. It seemed to be based on history but they couldn't work the story into a script. It felt all disjointed. I was going from scene to scene and I wasn't certain why. The fates of countries were at stake but this needed to be brought about by the characters and it wasn't. I just couldn't care much about anyone or what they were going through. It didn't look all that hot either. I don't know what it looked like originally but this print looked washed out. The dubbing was awful which added to its ultimate cheeziness. The fight scenes were lacking as well. This just wasn't a good effort at any level. There was a certain sense of nostalgia to it all but not enough to make me want to repeat the experience.

War Goddess. Now this was something else entirely. Beautiful, curvaceous women taking their clothes off, oiling up and wrestling. What else is there!? Actually, this was better than it had to be. They actually found a whole lot of women who could ride horses with a great sense of authority and handle swords just as well. In all too many of these kinds of flicks the women seem as though the picked the sword up for the first time when they walked on to the set. That wasn't happening here. These gals could rumble.

The script was a whole lot better than "Gods of War" as well. Two sisters, both vying for the position of queen bee of the tribe. The one wins and the other is jealous. Meanwhile, they need to bring dudes in for a night of wanton lust so they can get knocked up and keep the tribe healthy.

Good b rated movie. Takes me back to the 70's. I am just sorry it is so chopped up and missing several scenes. It's to bad. This film would be even better. Not to be taken seriously, but just to enjoy, and have a laugh.

"War Goddess": As a fan of paplums featuring women warriors, I must say that the combat scenes between the Amazon army and cavalry and the attacking barbarians and the female warriors taking on Theseus' Greek infantry and horsemen were superb. I think it's the finest example of a paplum featuring women warriors that depicts them fighting as warriors and not bimbos. They are dressed like warriors in proper costume of the Bronze Age, with authentic-looking swords and armour, and they know how to ride horses into combat. The producers took the time to drill these ladies in swordfighting, horsemanship, and battle drill. The barbarians were slaughtered and the Greeks took quite a pasting until Theseus called a truce, which I didn't care for as the women were about to kill them all, too. The DVD is a compilation of several VCR transfers, which the movie does apologize for, but it's still an excellent movie worth watching for fans of this genre.

As for "War Gods Of Babylon", all I can say is that is was boring and not worth watching.
