About the Author

David Swanson is an American author, blogger, and anti-war activist. He served as press secretary for Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich's 2004 presidential campaign. He was a key figure in making the Downing Street Memo known across America. The memo, the leaked minutes of a meeting of the British war cabinet, exposed the lies behind the war in Iraq and was a key element in turning the majority of American people against the war in Iraq. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

WAR IS A LIE is the 2010 self-published book by Humanist contributor David Swanson, in which he attempts a comprehensive refutation of all the rationales offered for any and all wars. "War is not a mysterious part of a divine plan nor is it an unavoidable manifestation of human nature," says the author. "It's the reason you have financial worries. It is very likely going to destroy our economy if it doesn't destroy our environment first, although it may more quickly destroy our representative government--but possibly not before it kills us all through blowback or weapons proliferation." The book challenges readers to accept their own culpability in perpetuating the catastrophic human creation that is war... --This text refers to the Digital edition.

[David Swanson] DAVID SWANSON
When conservatives hear progressive political activist David Swanson coming, they might want to run away. But sometimes, they do so quite literally. After Vice President Dick Cheney announced plans to speak at the Miller Center on November 16, Swanson publicly called for Cheney's arrest for conspiracy to commit torture. "Were a local resident credibly accused of torture, I sincerely doubt you would hesitate to seek his or her immediate arrest and indictment," Swanson wrote in a November 14 letter emailed to Charlottesville and Albemarle law enforcement and posted on his website, warisacrime.org. Mere hours later, the Miller Center announced that Cheney's visit would be postponed for "personal reasons" and that he'd reschedule for early next year. Coincidence? Perhaps. But either way, Swanson will undoubtedly lead the welcome parade if the former Veep appears.

Activist David Swanson is well respected in the anti-war community as a man who walks his talk in a bold, committed, solid way, that he is a principled leader.
Now we must add to that list of credentials authorship of an important, destined to be classic book.
War Is A Lie addresses the web of lies, the tabu subjects, the false claims, the mythic messages that are hollow and empty and it lays waste to them.

Swanson's book is a (I've never used the term to describe a book before) Tour de Force, an intellectual accomplishment that lays out the truths about war and the lies that support in a way that every peace activist, every anti-war organization and group must digest and frankly, use as the tools to take the arguments against war to a new more effective level.

if there are awards for brilliant books that explode new ways to oppose the evils of t his world, then David should sweep the field this year.

One more thing. It is an exceptional accomplishment to present a book with such important ideas. It is another thing to write extraordinarily well, so, on page after page, the words are quotable, rising off the page with vivacity.

"This book is revolutionary, and certainly truth-telling in a remarkable and brave way. The writing is so clear and easy-to-read, too. A pleasure to read, except that the content is so devastating, because it all means that not only are we utterly deceived but our entire reality is based on that deception. Swanson has gotten to the core of something. The only thing is I'm not sure he realizes how hopeless it is to expect a change -- and yet that is part of the appeal of his writing: his hopefulness in the face of lies and repression and denial." - Jennifer Van Bergen, author of The Twilight of Democracy: The Bush Plan for America.

Format: Paperback
David Swanson's in-depth analysis of the fact that war is perpetrated and perptuated by just a few people in power, to the detriment of everyone on earth and our planet earth itself, is a must read that will inspire the reader to take action against this huge injustice. If it hasn't been clear before, that war makes us poor both economically and morally, it will be clear to any reader of David's new book, "War is Lies". It is difficult to comprehend that all the warnings we've had for decades, (Gen. Dwight Esienhower had much to say about this and put it very succinctly when he said, "As a soldier who experienced war I must say that war is brutality, futility and stupidity.")about the war-profiteering industries running our governement, but David shows us how we have have been the victims of lies by people we trusted, and that we can no longer be apathetic about confronting the insanity of war. I am a "peacemaker" using whatever gifts I've been given, to write picture books and create games that teach children why violence and war is not the "power" to be emulated as they've been taught in video games, cartoons, and more. There are no "winners" in violence at any level, but the postive climate of peaceful relationships is where creative cooperation flourishes for the benefit of all. My book "The Planet Gazimbo in Galaxy Zamz" is obviously in a differnt, more simple format than David's, but I'm happy to see that it has also gotten 5-star reviews on the Amazon site!
Best Wishes to you, David. With your permission I will recommend your book on my website,
peacepowerpress.net I hope your book soars to "Best Seller" quickly! We need your wise insights and inspiration to be exposed to millions of people!
Peace and Best Wishes,
Frank Swift

While I agree overall with the points Swanson makes in this book (so he had the advantage of "preaching to the choir" in my case), my concerns with it are that certain knowledge was taken for granted (Pearl Harbor attack intentionally provoked?), some points were supported in whole or in part by anecdotes, and less information than I'd've liked was supported by references to primary source materials.

In the opening of the book Swanson states that he could have approached this book in two ways: the way that he did, and as an encyclopedic discussion of all wars and the lies that caused, perpetuated, justified and glorified them. There's value in the book he did write, but, in the end, I found myself wanting the encyclopedia.

Isn't it obvious to everyone by now that war accomplishes nothing and is a tragic waste of lives, money and our faith in the goodness of humankind? War is a criminal activity; it turns feeling human beings into coldblooded killing machines. What good ever comes of war? I've heard that veterans look back fondly on their war experiences as the best time in their lives. How sad that they can't create that camaraderie and teamwork in an arena other than war, death and destruction. David is a brilliant writer and researcher: literate, ironic, detail oriented, accurate, funny, sarcastic, clever, and spot on. He clearly loves to have fun with his subject, but he's also deadly serious. Ending war is the highest and best goal we could and must undertake and David is just the man to show us the path-- for our kids' sakes and the future of our lovely mother earth. Citizens, there's no time to waste; let's end the crime of war in our lifetimes.
