Editorial Reviews

Review

“The narrative flows easily, is illuminated by flashes of colorful detail, and relates the development of warfare to the political, technological and economic changes of the modern era. . . . well calculated to guide the beginner in further exploration of the subject or to serve as a quick-reference index for the experienced analyst.”–New York Herald Tribune --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb work brought the meaning of warfare to a new level, September 16, 2004
I read this book in 1970 and was astounded. I was teaching a course in military history to an advanced military officer course. Everyone was very appreciative of Ropp's work and even 34 years later it sticks in my mind as seminal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a Great Starting Point for Learning the History of War, December 30, 2011
By
Federal Farmer (Montgomery, AL United States) - See all my reviews
Ropp pretty much initiated the establishment of military history as an academic pursuit (even if to the chagrin of radicals). Although published in 1959, it has stood the test of time. Very readable and educational, even its footnotes function as a historiographical essay on the status of military history at the time of its publication.
