This review is from: War in Pacific [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The video version is 2 hours and 3 minutes long. It's roughly divided into two parts. The first hour is a sort of kaleidoscope of various theaters of operations in the Pacific. For example, it starts out with Tarawa and Kwajalein in 1943, then jumps to the fall of Singapore in 1942, then to Burma, then to Bougainville in 1943, then back to Singapore in 1942, then back to Burma ... well, you get the idea. Guadalcanal isn't mentioned until some 50 minutes into the film, and then only briefly. The Coral Sea, and Midway are barely mentioned. I don't recall Wake Island being mentioned at all. The film footage is pretty good, but the chronology is very confusing. The second hour is more orderly but only covers three subjects, devoting roughly 20 minutes each to Peleliu, the return to the Philippines, and Okinawa. Peleliu was a tragic bloodbath, but did not have much military significance. But it seemed to me that the film spent more time on Peleliu than it did on the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Makin, New Guinea, Bougainville, Tarawa, Kwajalein and Iwo Jima combined. |
