Beautiful edition,

I won't review the content of War and Peace as there are plenty of reviews already. I will confine my comments to the Collector's Library edition.
The translation is the classic Maude. Perhaps there are better translations out there, but I found this one quite readable. All of the Collector's Library editions are very attractive. This set is even more so with the beautiful jackets and slipcase. Each book is a small 4 x 6 that fits in a coat pocket or purse. I found it the most approachable edition. The books feature sewn bindings, cloth covers, ribbon marker and gilded page edges. Very nice durable books that will stand up to multiple readings and schlepping about. Pleasant to read and look at. The only caveat I found is the print is on the small side. You need good eyes or a good pair of glasses. I feel a sense of accomplishment having read the entire epic and discovered a new favourite author. I plan on reading it again. CRW is coming out with an unabridged version of Anna Karenina. I definitely plan on getting that one. |
