4.0 out of 5 stars The first and still one of the best, March 13, 2005
This review is from: War and Peace in the Gulf: Domestic Politics and Regional Relations into the 1990s (Exeter Middle East Policy S.) (Hardcover)
This was the first and still an excellent analysis of the dynamics that led to the Kuwait criis and Saddam's invasion, and covering the war itself (if you don't count the instant pretend-analyses that were being churned out). This volume has a superb analysis of the politics of Saddam's regime, and an unrivalled survey of relations in the wider Gulf from the 1970s through to the Conflict - although the book went to press one month before the war was over. Obviously time has overtaken sme of the contents, but the value of the longer-term analysis remains. It is striking also how prescient the extensive postscript proved to be. Also contains a very useful chronology of Gulf politics, and a great collection of documents.
