GOOD ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENT TO A METAL CLASSIC,

This review is from: War Pigs (MP3 Download)
I was introduced to Black Sabbath while in high school. Kiss first blitzed the FM band with "Rock and Roll All Night" from "Alive!", and I learned to play bass to be in the neighborhood band. "War Pigs" was one of my favorite songs to play with the band, so I'm (and it sticks with me today still) open to hearing new arrangments of the song. I can remember having to defend Ozzy and Sabbath from ignorant critics identifying them as devil-worshippers, and getting raised eyebrows from people who couldn't comprehend why a 'smart guy' would listen to a band like Sabbath. I can sum that up in two words: "Profound Catharsis".
I liked Cake's arrangment except for two things: the fire engine alarms on the breaks compared to the air raid siren on the introduction to the original version (which this arrangement skips) don't work very well--as the fire engines make this re-interpreted metal classic border on disco! Also, the ending is too abrupt--the horns overlaying the closeout riff is a nice touch, but this arrangement should have borrowed from live renditions of the song by Sabbath for inspiration--as this ending fumbles the feeling, like the band is trying to escape from any metal influence. I like the bubbling bass riff under the vocal, though--nice touch. And the addition of the bluesy, Deep Purplish keyboards works as well. Overall, a very original, and well-executed arrangement.
