This is the basic source for the Civil War, 128 volumes, serial 1-130. Cost for a complete new series is about $2,650.00 & is sometimes sold with the 52 volume set of the Southern Historical Society Papers as a freebie.

If you are a serious Civil War historian or only a buff, SPEND THE MONEY!

Yes, most university libraries have these sets, but many public libraries do not. Personally I could not live without this set on my shelf when doing research.

Whatever doubts you may have, dispel them. This is without a doubt the most useful tool, and the most intimate source of knowledge for one concerned with the history of these events.

One of several of the similar Civil War research volumes I have recently purchased on Amazon. These books are the "Official" history of the Union and Confederate forces from actual after action reports and other correspondence between junior and higher headquarters. Very interesting reading. Couldn't afford to purchase the complete 128 volume set - but was able to locate and purchase select volumes for KS and MO forces and engagements.

It says in advertisements it contains all of civil war history- but in truth this is a series and of many books and I ended up w/ one I am not particularly interested in. I guess it might be best to get the CD which supposedly contains the 100+ volumes

As with the other 128+ volumes of the War of the Rebellion, it is the starting point and basis for research for all serious Civil War studies. In the particular case of this volume; the Civil War in the western states and territories comes to life. The Confederate invasion of New Mexico from Texas, which sparked responses from both Colorado and California reveals the empire-building plan for the expansion of slavery into the West and nearly satisfies Jefferson Davis' long-held desire to establish a railroad connection to the west coast. But what it really reveals is the lack of insight that General H.H. Sibley possessed when extolling the virtues of the invasion to the Confederacy. New Mexico was not interested in slavery or slaves, except as trade commodities. New Mexico did not lend itself to plantation agriculture, and New Mexicans failed to provide anticipated support for Sibley.
The invasion was put down with help from the Colorado Volunteers, whose timely arrival at Glorieta sent the Rebels packing.
