HEROES ON PARADE AT LAST, February 15, 2009
This review is from: War Stories (DVD)
The clandestine operations against the demonic forces of evil during WW II were remarkable. These men and women were in a class by themselves, battling the sadistic madness of the bottom-feeders of the 20th Century, the Germans.
It's about time they got their "place in the sun."
Tony Horowitz

Heroes all, November 29, 2010
This review is from: War Stories (DVD)
WAR STORIES is six half-hour DISCOVERY EUROPE shows consisting of interviews and some archive footage. There's no extras on this disc beyond chapter selection and segment synopses (which are paraphrased below.) It's a very moving and unique "first person" documentary series.
CONTENTS--
ESCAPE FROM AUSCHWITZ--
Arthur Dodd was one of the few Allied POW's held at this death camp where he participated in a prison escape and aided Polish partisans in a sabotage operation. After being recaptured he became part of the "death march" near war's end. A second prisoner, Leon Greenman tells of the horrors he witnessed at Auschwitz.
RESISTANCE FIGHTER--
Swiss-born multilinguist Pierre Lalande was recruited by the British secret service to set up an escape network in France. After his capture, Lalande was deported to the Dora labor camp, where the V2 rocket was being developed. He assisted in disrupting this weapons program.
NAZI HUNTER--
Ian Bell was a POW of the North African campaign who was held at the Citadel in Italy. He escaped by grabbing the axle of a moving train, then met up with partisans based in the Apennines. Bell took part in several guerilla raids on Gerrman troops, was recaptured and returned to the Citadel, where he barely survived severe torture and the threat of execution.
WAR CORRESPONDENT--
Claire Hollingworth was a reporter stationed in Poland in the late 1930s. During a fortuitously timed shopping trip to Germany, she observed troops massing on the border and thus broke the story of the Sept. 1st invasion.
Billie Jordan was a cameraman who took historic footage at El Alamein, Tunis and Monte Cassino.
Harry Oaks was assigned to film at the Belson death camp. He describes what he saw there.
SPECIAL OPERATIONS--
George Millar was a British Special Ops agent fluent in French who worked with French resistance fighters to destroy enemy supplies and railway lines and to disrupt troop movements.
THE JEWISH BRIGADE--
A unit organized in Britain that was comprised of Jews from 50 countries. Mark Hyatt recalls the humiliation of German troops forced to surrender to Jewish soldiers. After the war these men aided starving Jewish refugees. Many later went to Palestine and participated in efforts to establish a Jewish state there.
