Book Description

July 2003
The War on Terror is both a vague concept and a growing source of dispute in the U.S. and around the world. The problems of the current war on terror are becoming obvious while the steps necessary to completely win are still unclear. This book pulls the reader out of the turmoil surrounding the current conflict and it clearly lays out the paths to victory against terrorism.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A broad overview of the War on Terror that is divided into five sections and twelve chapters. Each section and chapter is relatively free-standing so readers with specific interests or questions may start reading at any point.

Although this book examines progress and problems of the war on terror as it currently exists, that is not its primary focus. Ultimately, what is provided is a clear picture of how victory will be achieved and how progress may be judged regardless of how the current war on terror evolves.

From the Author

To understand how to fight terrorism, we need to focus on the root problems and issues and ignore the surface complexities. Who are the terrorists? Why are they terrorists? Who supports them? Why are they supported? How can we make progress hunting for terrorists in other countries? Why would foreign countries help us? Why would foreign countries help terrorists? What part does religion play? How do we perceive our progress? How do others perceive our progress? How can the American people help/hurt? How can Congress help/hurt? How can the rest of the world help or hurt us in our War on Terror? What is the definition of winning a War on Terror? What is the definition of losing?

Touching on everything from al Qaeda to weapons of mass destruction, this book answers these questions but it raises many more...

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing..., November 3, 2003
By
A Reader (the United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The War on Terror (For the Common Man) (Hardcover)
This was a short book that initially left me unimpressed - two or three stars at best.

The disturbing part of this book was that I couldn't walk away. I read it again and again. Each time the book seemed to have evolved.

I'm currently on my fourth reading and I now realize that what has happened is that some of my assumptions were challenged. I didn't like it at first but I had to go back and find where my assumptions were wrong.

Overall, this book was eye-opening and harsh. It paints a picture of the War on Terror that feels correct intuitively but it still contains many debatable generalizations and theories.
