5.0 out of 5 stars Those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it, April 19, 2003
This review is from: War Through the Ages (Revised and Enlarged ) (Hardcover)
I can't believe that such a classic monumental work, the work of a man's life, is being sold here used for eight dollars! This was one of my first military books which I started reading when I was about 15 years old, and I still come back to it from time to time 20 years later. If you want a fundamental understanding of basic military matters and military history, told in an engaging narrative form, from the battle field to logistics to politics, social beliefs and diplomacy, from Ancient Greece to the Korean War, you start here. This work should be republished and reread after the Second Gulf War, to quote: "Those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it."

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read, September 16, 2003

This review is from: War Through the Ages (Revised and Enlarged ) (Hardcover)
Without question this is the best single military history that I have ever read and I have read more than a few. I am sure that there are some errors in the book, but there is so much truth. I first read this book in Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning Ga. Later, after I returned from Viet Nam and went back to school, I read it again, and again. I would look into it for some insight into an area I was studying and hours later I would still be there reading. It is that kind of good.

While the more you know the more you will appreciate this book, it is not necessary to know anything in order to enjoy reading it. It can be read as an adventure, or as history. Other than it is possible to learn from history, this man had no ax to grind when he wrote this book. If you think you know military history, How much do you know about Jan Huss? About needle guns? About the difference in the meaning of storm trooper between WW I and WW II? I didn't know much, but now I do.

If you have gotten the idea that I really like this book-then I guess I'm done.

This is a great historical account that would benefit anyone interested in military history. There are many modern books available today, however there are those like this which should be standard reading, I highly recommend it.
