5.0 out of 5 stars DVD Please....A Gem Among The Duke's 1940's Films, November 20, 2003
This review is from: War of the Wildcats [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This a John Wayne film like no other. Take it from a huge fan that's seen most of his movies. Although this is not classified as a comedy, the Duke's turns in a sly performance full of great one-liners and facial expressions that had me rolling. Its action adventure in the oil fields and it's very entertaining and fun. Wayne is Cowboy Dan Somers and he competes with oilman Jim Gardner for oil lease rights on Indian land in Oklahoma, as well as for the favors of schoolteacher Cathy Allen. It has a good supporting cast including George "Gabby" Hayes.
You will never see the Duke quite like this in any other role. If you're a fan of the Duke, this film is a must so track down a copy while you can. It was originally titled "In Old Oklahoma" and then reissued as "War of the Wildcats" If we cross our fingers, maybe this will be re-released on DVD as it deserves to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Western with all the trimmings..., March 22, 2010
By
Tony Harris (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: War of The Wildcats (DVD)
John Wayne plays cowboy Dan Somers who competes with rich oilman Jim Gardner for gusher claims and for the very pretty Cathy Allen.Ms. Allen is sort of a liberated woman, almost of a scarlet letter nature for expressing some racy ideas in a book. She is torn between both men. Jim Gardner is wealthy and powerful, but the John Wayne character seems to be more on the side of justice, and his affections are more sincere. Both men lock horns. I felt this was a good example of the wholesome westerns that they just don't make nowadays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Clean Wetern Fun, April 5, 2010
This review is from: War of The Wildcats (DVD)
This is a good old western, the kind they just don't make any more. John Wayne is wonderful as always and so young in this role as the good cowboy on the side of the Indians. The plot involves John Wayne against a greedy oil tycoon. Of course good triumphs (I hope I didn't spoil the ending!) But of course John Wayne always comes up smelling like a rose in these grat movies. Hollywood should go back to its roots and make fun romantic adventures like this.
