5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - one of the best on this topic.
As a single Christian man in a sexually charged society, I am always on the lookout for books that help me on the path to sexual purity. This book certainly falls into that category. As one who has dealt with this issue firsthand, the author faces this crucial issue head-on, and provides practical and challenging insights that are Biblically-based on how to deal with it...

3.0 out of 5 stars An equivalent book for women?
This was a very good book for letting me into the world of men and their struggles with sexuality. However, as you may have gathered it is not very helpful for us single women who have strong libidos and face daily temptations. I had read this book not realizing it was just for men, and I was disappointed to find that out. I would like to see a similar book for women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - one of the best on this topic., July 4, 2001
This review is from: The War Within: Gaining Victory in the Battle for Sexual Purity (Paperback)
As a single Christian man in a sexually charged society, I am always on the lookout for books that help me on the path to sexual purity. This book certainly falls into that category. As one who has dealt with this issue firsthand, the author faces this crucial issue head-on, and provides practical and challenging insights that are Biblically-based on how to deal with it.

As an ex-military man myself (USMC), I really identified with the author and the temptations he experienced while he was in the Navy. His allusions to the wide variety of sexual pitfalls in the military are not exaggerated, which makes this book especially relevant to those in the armed forces. But almost any man, military or civilian, can relate to the seductive power of pornography and illicit sexuality. Daniels is very honest about his stuggle, and he communicates the need and the means for personal holiness with an immediacy that will challenge any man in His walk with God.

I have seen one pitfall with these kind of books (not with this one, however). The danger of focusing too much on fighting a particular sin or struggle to the detriment of what should be our real focus - a positive, love relationship with Christ. Indeed, Jesus said that the fulfillment of the law is to "love God with all your heart, strength, soul, and mind," and the second is like it, to "love your neighbor as yourself." That, coupled with the comparison of the church as "the bride of Christ" leads me to believe that the best remedy for this (or any) issue is to cultivate a constant love relationship with God. Of course, that doesn't negate one's personal responsibility for holiness, nor does it alleviate the need for accountability. But if we fail to meet our need for love and intimacy in the right way, we will continue to try and meet it the wrong way - with sin.

Other books on this topic I would recommend are "Every Man's Battle" by Stephen Arterburn, "When Good Men are Tempted" by Bill Perkins (a nice guy - he spoke at one of my Multnomah Seminary grad chapels once, and was very personable yet challenging. I really enjoyed being able to actually talk to an author of a book that I liked and respected, and not being disappointed by the experience.), and "Freedom from Sinful Thoughts" by J. Heinrich Arnold. The Bible is quite helpful as well...;-) God Bless, and finish strong!

5.0 out of 5 stars heavy on hard-hitting practical advice, light on theology, July 29, 1998

This review is from: The War Within: Gaining Victory in the Battle for Sexual Purity (Paperback)
There are lots of books on "why" you shouldn't give in to sexual temptation. I liked this book because it gives practical advice on "how" to not give in. It is heavily Bible based. I've met the author and he is a committed Christian. Also, the military analogies are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pertinent & Clear, March 25, 2002

This book was clear & to the point. Pertinent Scriptural references through-out the book in a systematic style. Unlike many other books on this topic, the author is succinct on his & others' problems and heavy on the solution; how to be IN Christ and Walk in the Spirit (not fulfill the lust of the flesh).

The book is pertinent for a man no matter what level of struggle he may have with unholy sexual desires.

This is the best book on this topic in the Christian arena, after having read 5 of them...

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely helps to understand what is going on, March 21, 2001

This review is from: The War Within: Gaining Victory in the Battle for Sexual Purity (Paperback)
From the moment I saw the reviews for this book it intriged me. Now that I have read it I highly recommend it to all who are not quite sure what is going on with themselves. I will do nothing but get to the point. This book really helped me by letting me realize how my life is related to this book. I could not believe some of the things I was reading. A lot of this book is about my life. I did not realize it until recently that some of my behaviors were not as normal as I thought. This book has given me a path on where I should be going to get over the battle. The information is practical and really makes it easy to understand how a person can get the help needed to free himself and whom ever else is involved. From a person who was thought to be normal, I may be to late with my own marriage but hopefully you are not. This book will help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective for All Ages, January 8, 2004

I lead a small group of high school guys through this book. Each one the guys in my group had a severe addiction to pornography and each felt as though they couldn't be used for Christ due to their addiction. This book offered hope and encouragement through a straight forward and purposeful approach. None of us have been in the military, but I would say his military references were extremely effective in getting his point across to the reader. The lives of these high schoolers were changed as a result of God using this book in their lives. It is a great book for all ages and wonderful in a small group(accountability) setting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Redemption WITHOUT Compromise, January 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The War Within: Gaining Victory in the Battle for Sexual Purity (Paperback)
Forget all of the other popular Christian books out there and get this book. It is straight foward and cuts to the chase. More importantly it is biblically based without any compromise to the truth of scripture or the reality of man. It explains the causes and effects of your struggle and offers scriptural advice on destroying the cycle. The format is understandably less graphic than many other Christian books on the topic and instead uses various analogies and scriptural helps in order to get the point across. Short chapters with scripture verses and study questions aid the reader. For the lack of these aspects many other Christian books fail in their purpose. Not this one. Get it! NOW!So you can once again rejoice in the purity of true holiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, scripturally strong, May 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a very good book, very filled with scripture not only throughout every chapter but also in a useful appendix of memory verses that will be helpful on various topics related to purity. The military analogies and personal stories are easy to relate to (and sometimes educational) even for those not familiar with military practices. The first chapter is not the greatest (a history and statistics about how things are getting worse and worse), but it gets better quickly after that. I've read many other books on the subject, some 12-step related and some not. This one is definitely not 12-step and doesn't use the language of "addiction" much if at all, but compatible in its principles of need for God, transparency, need for fellowship and accountability, etc. It's realistic in recognizing that solving the problem isn't a one-time thing but requires continual vigilance. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read, January 26, 2008
This is definitely one of the best books I've ever read on the subject of male sexual sin. The author's use of military examples are easy to grasp and often left me with a renewed view on hard issues. I especially appreciated the sheer volume of practical Scripture that the author includes. The struggle over lust is one that heavily relies on God's grace and forgiveness, and The War Within repeatedly makes that fact known and offers men great encouragement for the outlook of this struggle.
