5.0 out of 5 stars Epic!
I was stationed in Hawaii on a US Navy Submarine and was sitting in the radio room while the local station was announcing that they were going to play a rock version of War of the Worlds. Since I had the duty I had no place to go, I listened to it.

Superb! It gave me chills then and it still does today. Richard Burton's voice really adds the glue to this whole concept...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth checking out if you're a prog-rock or Moody Blues fan
Jeff Wayne's 1978 musical version of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" isn't a classic, but it contains some really good music and should appeal to fans of progressive rock and the Moody Blues. The songs and instrumentals are interwoven with a narration by Richard Burton, and the singers include the Moodies' Justin Hayward (his two songs charted as singles in the U.K.,...

Superb! It gave me chills then and it still does today. Richard Burton's voice really adds the glue to this whole concept album. Phillip Lynott of Thin Lizzy, Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, and British Vocalists Julie Covington and David Essex provide the rest of the vocal talent.

If you have never heard this then buy it. You wan't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Wonderful, July 11, 2004

I am still only 15, but I heard this when I was nine, and thought it was the best thing since chocolate. It introduced me to many, many other albums and bands. I owe it all to Jeff Wayne, and also to Rick Wakeman as I soon after heard his Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
This is a very powerful album in many respects, not only for it's famous narration by Richard Burton and its even more famous DUM DUM DUMMM, DUM DUM DUMMM, you get the picture. (I hope!) I truly believe that anyone who likes any form of music from the 70's will like this. I wont pretend that todays younger generation will appreciate it as the masterpiece it is, but all the rest of us should proudly own a copy of 'JEFF WAYNES MUSICAL VERSION OF THE WAR OF THE WORLDS.' It's a true classic, up their with Mozart and Haydn, well done Jeff! H.G. Wells would be proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutley Incredible!, May 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: War of the Worlds (Audio CD)
Being a Sci-Fi and Moody Blues fan, when I heard about this album, I had to have it. Originally picked up the LP and I was blown away!. (The LP and book are securely preserved in my collection at the moment) Later, when it was available on CD, I special-ordered the import. Now I'm happy to see it available again (with the later re-mixes!). I've bought two copies and given them away to some of my friends who I know will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, August 23, 2002

I was in college when the roommate of one of my friends told me, "You've gotta listen to this album!" (Those were the days of vinyl LPs.) I was utterly blown away. I'd heard rock operas before, but the mixture of Jeff Wayne's excellent music, Richard Burton's elocution, and H.G. Wells' classic story made for an amazing combination. This release features remastered versions of the orgignal 1978 double album, plus four "remix" cuts of the more accessible cuts. "Forever Autumn" has even gotten airplay on some FM stations, and deservedly so. It's probably the one cut which works standing alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, June 14, 2005
This review is from: War of the Worlds (Audio CD)
I bought this album when I was 17 on double cassette and that was before the arrival of CD's and I am still playing it. Rushing out to the shops to get this new version on CD and hope to be playing it again for another 20 years. Definetly a desert island album !!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars a pleasant experience after the new dismal version, July 13, 2005
By
This review is from: War of the Worlds (Audio CD)
After watching the dreadful mess called "War of the Worlds" at the movies, I went back to my stereo and put on Jeff Wayne's version and was awed as I have been so many times before. Just as H.G.Wells spun around in his grave upon hearing Tom Cruise ruin his story he must rejoice every time a fan is kept on the edge of their seat, as the Thunderchild tries vainly to save humanity from the evil tripods( a scene the was left out of the movie). If you realy want to expereince the War of the Worlds buy this CD and sit in your room an let the music, Richard Burton and Jeff Wayne give you an experience you will never forget.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Almost Classic, July 6, 2005
This review is from: War of the Worlds (Audio CD)
I fell in love with this recording when I was about 8, and the new remastered version has become essential buying since I've more or less worn out my parents' original cassette tapes!
It's fabulously hammy and old-fashioned, but definitely fabulous. Both the setting and the music can transport you into a world long since passed away.
There are some genuinely eerie and creepy parts of this, and some catchy singalong tunes - if you're in the right frame of mind, 'Forever Autumn' can be genuinely touching.
Richard Burton's narration adds a pleasing depth to the whole piece. The second CD is slightly weaker, but worth persevering with.
If you're a sci-fi fan, or a prog fan, or you just want to listen to something a little bit bizarre, check this out. I may be slightly biased by my childhood preferences, but there's still plenty here to interest those of a more adult mindset!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic classic work of music, November 5, 2002
By
"blix-review" (Mexico City, Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: War of the Worlds (Audio CD)
This is one of the classic master pieces of rock orchresta type of music that any one that is attcahed to the 70's rock operas and the Mody Blues music should have in its collection. Jeff Wayne's master work based on the now classic story by H.G. Well's invation of earth by aliens and Mr. Burton's narrative voice, it is just UNIQUE in the rock scenario. Justin Hyward's (Mody Blues)voice is in its best in "Forever Autum".
Difficult to find in a regular record store but now in its remastered version it si available again to the world with a superior recording sound...just buy it and enjoy.
