4.0 out of 5 stars raw yet brilliant February 1, 2012
This album consists of raw doom metal with a heaviness that would make kirk windstien smile. Yes... one could make a crowbar comparison based on the heaviness and a similarity in some of the riffing as well. This is a more traditional doom metal sound though. I must also point out that this album has one of my favorite singers (yes... actual singing!)in krista van-guilder. Her powerful bluesy vocals are quite appropriate for this style of music. Her vocal melodies ride on top of her bludgeoning riffs (that's right... she plays all guitars on this) to great effect, although, there are some parts that sound like they weren't worked out properly before recording them. This easily rivals most of what people consider to be the ultimate doom albums. Krista left the band after this one so this is a "one of a kind" situation here. I'm never letting go of this one!!! The band's second album sounds too derivative of sleep's work for me to consider as their own sound as well as the new vocals being a very generic "growlspeak" style. Oh well... at least this first album was as impressive as it is original.
