4.0 out of 5 stars Unappreciated Fantasy, January 31, 2012

This review is from: WarLands: The Age of Ice (Paperback)
With all the comics following superheroes, supernatural artifacts, antiheroes, and espionage, it was quite refreshing when Warlands came out. Unfortunately it was gone before I could get to appreciate it. Here is Volume 3 of the saga, "Age of Ice" and though it tells a good story it at times feels disjointed, and as much as I love Pat Lee's art, sometimes it was just too dark to see what was happening. That said it's still worth it, and i'm currently doing what i can to find all the volumes and trades. Also looking into Shidima, set in the same world but with a more Eastern slant.

If you're tired of the everyday comic and are looking for something new check out Warlands. If you are a D&D fan, Lord of the Rings fan or any kind of fantasy, check out Warlands!

4.0 out of 5 stars some talented fellas, December 17, 2003
This review is from: WarLands: The Age of Ice (Paperback)
Picked this one up just to try out something new. Like reviewers mentioned for the other Warlands graphic novel, this one has a nice story and the artwork is wonderful. There's mages and elves and demons and the whole works going on, but something about the story doesn't make it seem so 'been there, already done that.' It may be the character development (that doesn't happen nearly enough in many a comic!) and plot twists that occur throughout.

The artists definitely know their way around a piece of paper. If I had to complain, it would have to be about legibility. Sometimes the text can get lost on the page and the artists tendency to fully render out every inch of every frame as well as cropping in so tightly onto a small portion of a scene can make it almost impossible to tell what is being portrayed. The colors were often handled nicely, and it may just be my version of the book, but sometimes they get a little muddy and it somewhat hampers the legibility. But don't get me wrong, if I had one inch of their talent, I'd be one happy individual. I did enjoy this and would recommend it to anyone looking for something fresh.
