Book Description

Gallery September 1, 2006
A photographic history spanning a century of innovation in military aviation, this book features forty of America’s greatest combat aircraft from World War I and World War II to the modern era--the true warbirds. This collection captures the “greatest generation” of warbirds—the restored B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-24 Liberators, P-38 Lightnings, P-47 Thunderbolts, P-51 Mustangs, transports, trainers, bombers, and fighters—close-up at rest or flashing in action by premier air-to-air aviation photographer Max Haynes. Each of the 250 photographs—200 in color—is accompanied by detailed information on the pictured aircraft, its pilot, crew, and unique history, making this volume the ultimate resource on combat aircraft in the twentieth century.

Review

Pacific Flyer, October 2006
“We loved this book because it's filled with great photos of warbirds of all type...there's page upon page of fantasic photos of beautiful airplanes...It would make a great Christmas gift for a warbird fanatic."

Cybermodeler Online, September 2006
“At first blush, this looks like another compilation of photos, but this one is a little different…Author and aviation photographer Max Haynes has compiled a nice array of contemporary airshow photos that effectively catalog the aircraft you’re likely to see at your local airshow…If you’re an average airshow enthusiast, or even a modeler wanting to see some different perspectives from restored examples, this title is inexpensive, small enough to fit in a backpack or purse, and worth having around to keep those ‘experts’ honest.”

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a look..., September 2, 2007

This review is from: Warbirds (Gallery) (Paperback)
I am also a very serious aviation photographer and I picked up this book on a whim. There are a lot of very well done compositions in this book. Many are images to brag about and show both the artistry and skills of the shooter very nicely. On page 161 there is really interesting shot of the CAF Tracker starting up with exhaust smoke. On page 46 and 47 we have truly unique perspective on the B25. The shooters use of perspective on many of the images is excellent!!! Sadly though there are a number "almosts" and though you can see the intent of the photo, it just doesn't quite make it. Even more unfortunate is that on many of these "almosts" there is also a lot of obvious Photoshop work. On these images you can see such things as excessive image noise, over use of the sharpening tools, and the shadow detail control. Three really clear classic examples of this can be seen on pages 80 and 81. A cool composition with a pair of L-Birds with a warm sun, but there are halos around the wheels and around the fuselages, and the noise is almost distracting from the image. On pages 56 and 57 what could have been a nice air to air of a chrome BT13 is again ruined by excessive image noise under the wings, halos around the wheels and an obvious attempt to correct it. Then on page 191 we have the classic high speed fly past by an F18 Hornet. Great shot, except for the horrible image noise under the wings. I do think the book is worth the $15 or so that it costs, and if your into aviation photography it is certainly worth a look. But there are quite a few images that I would not have included in the book.
