5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about a great war, February 8, 1999

This review is from: Warfare and the Third Reich: The Rise and Fall of Hitler's Armed Forces (Classic Conflicts) (Hardcover)
This was a really great book to those people, like me, who can't read enough about the second world war. I really enjoyed this book because the author (chant)has written very close to the truth about the war, especially the limitations of the german industry. This has gone practically unnoticed by so many books, that people in general fail to grasp the enormous problems the german armed forces faced. It also gives some great insights in why the german generals were so much better than its allied counterparts. A great book to read and I recommend it deeply.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for WWII History Buffs, October 27, 2000
By
This was a very well written book concerning the "behind the scenes" of Germany during the Nazi era. This book is actually a series of articles about a variety of topics dealing with the German war machine. It covers technology (uboats, rocket program, jet aircraft, etc), mini-biographies of all the key German generals (Rommel, Rundstedt, Guderian, etc) as well overviews of the various campaigns (Barbarosa, N Africa, Italy, France(1940 & 1944), etc).

This book would make an excellent addition to any WWII history fan's library as a superb supplement. It is not a book for those learning about WWII for the first time, but a great work for those who already know basic WWII history.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting montage of facts with a German perspective, February 16, 2010
This is not your typical faithful reproduction of the war but it's a collection of interesting facts of people and events that had impact to the war. The story starts in the 1930s with Hitler's rise to power and the henchmen that helped him achieve it - Goebbels, Himmler, Goring and others. A large portion of the book also includes Hitler's generals, the battles they were in and the contributions made to the war effort. In a few cases there were generals included who were against the Nazis.

Some of the key battles discussed are: the air war over Britain, the fight for control of the Atlantic, Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk and many others. The German weapons from pistols to tanks were also discussed and included the advantages and disadvantages the German soldier faced against his enemy. In the science and technology section there is interesting coverage of the weapons of the future. It was more than just covering the V1, V2 missles, the Me-262 jet. German scientists were working on other missile technology that might surprise you.
There are many topics covered in this book; more than can be described in this review. Mr Chant is well informed and has an interesting, concise style of writing.

There is no Notes or Bibliography but there is an extensive Index to help find your desired topic.
This would make a good primer and though much of the dialog is common knowledge, there are gems of wisdom that even experienced readers may learn from.
