Editorial Reviews

Recipient of the 1943 Oscar TM for Documentary Feature, the Fighting Lady is an educational and entertaining look at life aboard a US aircraft carrier during World War Two. It follows what has now been identified as the USS Yorktown through the mundane daily routines of a sailor to the infamous Marianas "turkey shoot". A fascinating insight into the workings of, what was then, a new piece of military hardware.

Documentary. It is important to watch this without the intent of comparing it to more modern, big budget Hollywood movies of the genre. This film was made from film created at a time when only US military photographers were holding their little cameras and were actually being shot at. The historical aspects of this film are important because at the time it was being made, then shown the American population watching this was seeing something they had never seen before. The film is about a time of great peril when Americans were very much afraid the unknown enemy, Japan, might actually sail up to California and off-load several hundred divisions of troops onto US beaches. Taken in the light of its historical perspective, this is an excellent film.

The ship being shown is the second carrier USS Yorktown, the first was lost at Midway. It is old, but that is not a negative. In fact, I think that adds to the value. It was done during combat operations in the Second World War, and does have some errors (both intentional and unitentional), but it does go to show that thoughts and ideas the people were thiking at that time.
If you enjoy history at all, then you will like this film.

Enjoyed seeing the story of "many" aircraft carriers through the Second World War. Felt real and informative, not just hype and fear. Thank you, each of you that served. I took several days out to sea on the Enterprise while writing an article for our paper.

Dated and written as a wartime morale booster, but very good. My wife found an old letter written by her farther in Jacksonville in 1945 while being discharged from carrier duty. In the letter, he highly recommended the film as very realistic.

MY UNCLE SERVED ON THIS BEAUTY. HE RARELY TALKED ABOUT IT BUT WE WERE ALL EARS WHEN HE DID. AT AGE 80 I CAN STILL SEE HIS TEARS WHEN HE TALKED ABOUT HOW SOME OF HIS BUDDIES SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES TO SAVE HIM.

Great wartime documentary. If you have ever been to the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC you will greatly appreciate this movie. If you have not been, this will make you want to see the ship in person!
