4.0 out of 5 stars Great RTS if you like realizism, February 2, 2014

This is not StarCraft or RedAlert do not go into expecting base building, tank rushes, special commando units that can blow up buildings or other typical RTS tropes.

These games are based on real world units and real world tactics and issues. Cover and recon is critically important, if you drive your column of expensive top of the line tanks down a road with a forest on one side without a scout unit leading it be prepared for an unexpected and painful surprise. A few cheap anti tank infantry squads will turn your expensive tanks in wreckage littering the battle ground. Now if those tanks manage to catch infantry in the open its just as one sided.

These are great games but you have to change how you think and play if your coming from other RTS games. Its about recon, use of cover, using the right unit for the right job and maneuvering for effect. Outside of bridges and forests there are very few obstacles to keep you from flanking an enemy.

This game also takes into supplies, you can't expect your tanks/units to be in combat constantly without needing resupply or run them back and forth across the map without needing more gas. Supplies are on some of the single player maps. You can repair damaged vehicles with supply trucks or at Forward operating bases(F.O.B basically supply depots).

Morale also plays an important part in the game, I'm not talking about having an officers club or some monument or better pay to keep troops happy. More that troops under fire for long periods of time will eventually break and run. So while artillery might not be very effective against armor the bombardment will reduce their combat effectiveness and make them more likely to run. This can also mean that inexpensive units can sometimes overwhelm high end units even if they are having difficulty doing damage to them. So while a lot of old cheap tanks might have a lot of trouble hitting or damaging the newest most powerful tank they can still rattle the crew and make them less effective or and make them flee from the effects of being under heavy fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arguably one of the best RTS available right now., April 16, 2014

I think I bought both of these games on sale for like 5$ so I got a steal. Even at the current price of 24$ it is still a great deal considering how good the game is.

There is much deeper level of strategy, pre planning, unit placement, supply lines, finite ammo and fuel etc.

This game was pretty intimidating at first, but just play a few skirmishes and you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. But the graphics are awesome, one of the main draws for me, units and levels are wonderfully detailed and you can even over your mouse over a unit and scroll into it and the camera will lock so makes some great movie moments (following your Russian T37 tank column over a fast field to meet head to head with NATO forces with Katyusha rockets flying overhead, Glorious)

This is not your generic RTS, it is more complex than say Command and Conquer or Starcraft. Few of the differences compared to those games would be as follows...

- No "mining" of resources, you start with a set amount of points you spend on units in the beginning of the game. Each unit costs a different amount depending on the type of unit (infantry, support, armor, etc.) You can also accrue over time more points by capturing sectors and destroying enemy units.

-Units have experience, experienced units will be more effective in combat (hardened and veteran units will have better accuracy for example)

-There is a lot of micro management in this game, each unit as a finite amount of ammo and fuel. You can spend points on cargo trucks / helicopters to resupply your forces.

-Much deeper strategy and management, more complex than just rock > scissor > paper. Infantry garrisoned for example can absolutely destroy your armored forces but some countries even have armor with say a flamethrower attachment.

Just writing this review makes me want to play this game.

Give it a try, Amazon and Steam both regularly have both of these games on sale for dirt cheap so you'd be stupid not to buy if your an RTS fan like me.
