4.0 out of 5 stars Warhammer Mark of Chaos a missed gem.
Now, if you don't like the Warhammer Universe, you probably won't like this game. I don't care that isn't the most polished game, I care that its wicked fun and really fits into the Warhammer series. Its a great game, worth the money.

I really like the potential of this game. If the developers had put a bit more effort into this, this series could go toe-to-toe with the best strategy games out there. Of course, the problem is that the effort was a half-hearted one. I personally do not regret the purchase, but I do hope that Namco will give up the Warhammer license and allow another developer/publisher to have a crack at it.

First, the good things. The game looks great. A lot of care has been taken in the making of models and environments. The gritty Warhammer world comes out clearly in the visuals. The voice acting is pretty good as well. I like the hero dynamics and the big battles, even though they have a chaotic mob feel to them. The game ships with a number of maps, so you can play skirmishes after finishing the campaign, which is focused on the two new races (orcs and dark elves). I found the game to be very stable on my computer, which is not always the case with PC games nowadays.

Okay, the stuff that I didn't like. Where to begin: Unit animations, while improved over the original game, still do not give you the sense that visceral combat is taking place. Also, there is a lack of gameplay modes in single-player (just the campaign and skirmish). While the campaign is decent, it is quite hard in several missions, even on the normal difficulty level. And you cannot save the game within a mission. Thus, if you fail a mission (and you will), you have to start over. A map editor did not ship with the game, thus modding is not really supported. The game just feels a bit sterile and empty in other ways that are hard to describe.

After having played games such as Battle for Middle Earth 2 and Dawn of War, this game left me frustrated about all of its unrealized potential. The developer has not been known for releasing many patches or providing other support, so I do not imagine that the game will be improved upon in the future.

If you liked the original game (Mark of Chaos), Battle March is more of the same. There is not much here for those, like me, who primarily play single-player beyond the campaign. The game can be played on-line, but I am not sure that there's much of a community. In sum, there are better strategy games out there.

Y'know what's difficult, if not outright embarrassing, to not be able to do? Give an accurate rating for a video game.
I honestly don't know what this game is like from personal experience. It's $7 of junk until I hunt down an XP/Vista system.

Don't take my word for it? Here's a link to the Windows Compatibility website:
(...)

That will open the search for the game "Warhammer Battle March". If you'll note, it is not even included as to whether it is supported or not.
If you have no access to an XP machine or a 32-bit Vista machine.

This is NOT a rating for the actual product. I'm just upset that it is not supported on newer OS. For a reference, I can play Battle for Middle Earth 2, Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology, and Halo with absolutely no problem(s), so it came to me as a surprise that something newer just doesn't even work.

Maybe this will help one or two of you.

Simply put, this is the modern version of the original Warhammer Real-Time Tactical game, Dark Omen. That game was odd, and so is this one. Only Warhammer fanboys will like it for it's player vs player opportunities, and AI is sketchy at best. As in the original, your options for building an army are quite vast, but the actual deployment of options is based on game mechanics. Computer system resource management is below average, and the UI is awful. You cannot view much of what is going on, camera control is limited, and unit command is not intuitive. When compared to the Total War series, this game is simply lacking in the UI area. It amazes me that they made an expansion, because I stopped playing halfway through the first campaign. The idea, story, and execution of the campaign are great, but the numerous flaws in the actual battles outweigh the pros. Since this is not what I really want, I would like to see a Warhammer game more like Total War: Medieval, just with the Warhammer universe. But what publisher is going to pick that up?

I love the warhammer universe, but this gameplay is so boring, repetitive, unresponsive, and doesn't capture any of the fun of the tabletop or the darkness of the universe that I can't even recommend it to hardcore fans like myself.

Something is missing in this title. I gave it another try because the price was great. I paid for it on Amazon $9.79 I picked it because the expansion was included in it. But they didn't take the time to improve this game. I couldn't recommend this game to anyone who was a serious strategy gamer.
The model for these types of games have been established by the Total War series, like it or not. All games of this type will be judge by that standard. It's like they missed that event. Spend your money elsewhere. If you are looking for a good fantasy type wargame in the Total War mode go buy King Arthur: The Role Playing Fantasy Wargame! Now that is a good game that took notice of the Total War model.

Multiplayer is apparently locked until you finish the single player game. Which wouldn't be that bad if the single player was not so frustrating. You can't save half-way through a level so if you fail, you restart the whole level. No wonder this game was so cheap.

I have to start with... I am a BIG fan of the work that Games Workshop does. have been a Warhammer buff for about twenty years. This is one of the biggest let downs as a game I have ever experienced. The graphics are muddy, the controls are difficult and that brought my fifteen minute ordeal with the game to a close.

Great game but marred by terrible gameplay. This could have been amazing, the concept has unlimited potential but this game failed to showcase it properly.
