Book Description

September 1, 1997 Great Modern Masters
Never has an artist enthralled the public like Andy Warhol (1928-1987). His paintings of Campbell s Soup cans, dollar bills, Brillo boxes, Marilyn Monroe, and car crashes epitomize the popular culture of his age and have captured the imagination of millions.

This illustrated survey spans the entire array of Warhol's brash and provocative art, pausing to observe life at his studio -- the famous Factory -- as well as his forays into film, multimedia "happenings", and avant-garde enterprises the world over. Nearly 70 images, including 55 fullcolor plates, testify to the diversity and appeal of the art of the undisputed King of Pop.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Unique, bizarre, and often controversial, Andy Warhol in life and in death bridged the gap between high art and the ordinary, creating works that explored almost every artistic genre. From screen printing and "supermarket" art to oil paintings and photography, Warhol rocked the established art world, perhaps more so than any of his contemporaries. Collected within this illustrated guide to the "King of Pop" are almost 70 images reproduced with excellent clarity and incorporating every stage of Warhol's diverse artistic career. Fascinating histories of each piece make this a highly recommended guide to a cultural icon. --Naomi Gesinger

From School Library Journal

YAAEach of these volumes is arranged into three sections. First, the artist is introduced in the context of his time. The second part is a biographical sketch, accompanied by photographs of the artist. The third section consists of excellently reproduced, full-color photographs of the artist's work, with descriptive text and an overview of his career. Some of the works are not often seen, and are a feast for the eye. The clear grouping of information and the handsome layout, page design, and typography make these books appealing and accessible, even though they have no indexes. The texts are presented in a straightforward manner that is easy to understand. Suitable for research as well as for recreational reading.ATurid Teague, Fairfax County Public Library,

5.0 out of 5 stars Large Sized Full Page Color Reproductions of Artworks Appreciated, May 4, 2009

This review is from: Warhol Cameo (Great Modern Masters) (Hardcover)
At 12.5 x 10 inches in size this large book contains large reproductions of the artwork of Andy Warhol. Five pages of history about the artist at the beginning lead then to full-color plates, each with about one paragraph of explanatory notes.

What I appreciated about this book was the large scale reproductions. Unlike other art history books, this book is not full of lots of white space with too-small reproductions. Also appreciated is that the 55 large plates of colored artwork was not changed to black and white to save production costs. (The only black and white artwork in the book appears that way in real life.)

This is a nonfiction art history book produced for adults. The plates are arranged in chronological order by date of creation and show samples of all the different mediums used by Andy Warhol. There are 55 full color plates and almost 70 images total.

I used this book for my own self-education and curiosity about Andy Warhol and his part the Pop Art movement. I also used the book to show my children the artwork reproductions as part of a homeschool art history lesson. (One son got a chuckle over the piece "untitled (hernia) 1960-1962", and asked "Mom why would he use a private parts diagram for artwork?"). Otherwise there is nothing of alarm or to raise eyebrows at, for parents if they choose to show this book (intended for adults) to children.

I note that later when we had an art museum tour of an Andy Warhol exhibit, the docent used this book to show us additional important artwork of the artist that were not part of that specific exhibit. I felt that lent the book credibility.
