Sally Melville is a wonderful designer and she does not disappoint with this book. Written in collaboration with her daughter, this book is filled with wonderful potential gifts to knit for those you love. Many of them can even be finished in time for the holiday season if you start soon.

The book is divided into the following sections: For the Wee Ones; For Family and Friends; Keeping Warm; Feeling Festive. There is also an appendix that includes a glossary, yarn weights, and a list of resources.

When I first opened the book, I fell in love with the Malabrigo Lace yarn baby blanket. It's pieced together with nine squares of luscious pastel colors. The Heirloom Jumper for the littlest of ones, is just that - something you'll want to keep in your family for generations. It is THAT adorable. In the Family and Friends section their is a neat Glasses Case that can also be used to carry change or make-up. it has a Kaffe Fassett flair to it. As an avid reader, i fell in love with the Lace Bookmarks. Anyone who knit me one of these would win my heart. Knit with linen thread, they are really fine, knit with 000 needles. I wonder if my eyes would ever be able to focus again if I knit one for myself. There are several lovely sweaters for men and women included, one nicer than the other. In the Keeping Warm section, the Add-On Afghan caught my eye. As the author describes it, she "wanted an afghan that could be started now, used in progress, and finished whenever". It has a somewhat random stripe pattern and is knit with Galway Highland Heather in beautiful hues of blue, green, yellow and wine. The Skating Coat is lusciously retro and contemporary at the same time. It is knit with Cascade Eco and has the most beautiful sleeves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! October 11, 2010
By Tina
Sally Melville has a wonderfully creative mind and I am jealous. I am always so amazed by people who can create patterns from nothing - designing them to make beautiful items.

Warm Knits, Cool Gifts offers up 35 great knitting patters for just about anyone in the family and if you are interesting in making more personalized, homemade gifts for Christmas or birthdays, this is the book for you.

What first hit me is the high quality of the book. Loaded with beautiful color pictures that are easy to see - accompanied by knitting patterns that are clearly detailed - for everyone from the beginner to the more experienced knitter and everyone in between.

There is also a very nice selection of patterns for babies to adults and I loved the wide selection of gifts that are easily knitted up. In short, there is absolutely nothing to hate about this collection of knitting patterns.

I also liked the fact that the book is NOT hardcover, but rather a good quality softcover - making it way easier to tote around -

Love this collection.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great dissapointment September 11, 2012

I have a large library of books related to knitting. Most of which always provide something new that will be an enjoyable project. THIS BOOK IS FILLED WITH PROBLEMS. After reknitting the pattern stitches 6 times, I wrote to the author, called her in Canada and her response , by phone, was THE EDITORS WERE INCORRECT WITH INSERTING THE DIRECTIONS. Well now I continue to knit the dress as it is an easy pattern and I have high hope for a dress that will be very nice to wear as a casual outfit. Now I must realign the decrease stitches, measure every row and seek the best professional help I can locate. Other patterns in the book have a problem in every pattern. Can the editors ignore the author prior to printing. Yes I might return the book however I am determined to use the patterns as a tool to learn more about individual design. Good luck if you believe the dress will be as the directions indicate. The decrease chapter is so wrong. Just count the stitches and be careful. It is nice to know that this is the first book , of many I have purchased from Amazon, that has presented this problem. P.J. Today

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs for the whole family June 19, 2011
Unlike their first book (the wonderful, but badly-titled Mother-Daughter Knits) this book provides patterns for the whole family, starting with the wee ones. (Babies in overalls? Too cute.) There are sweaters for men, women, and children. I adore the red skating coat, and I loved the "Cardigan that Caddy Really Wanted." It's named from a cute anecdote of younger-Caddy asking for a simple, ribbed sweater and getting the "Sweater That Sally Made Instead." (Yes, those are two of the patterns, and I am charmed by the fact that those are the actual names.)

There are patterns for the usual accessories--scarves, hats, wrist-warmers-as well as an eyeglass case, some lace bookmarks, and a couple afghans. There are some home-for-the-holiday patterns, like a gorgeous log-cabin themed tree skirt, stockings, and ornaments for a Christmas tree. In this day and age it's almost unusual that this section actually focuses on Christmas rather than a more generic "winter holiday" theme, though the little 3D evergreen trees obviously would work for any holiday. I don't know if that affects your book-buying decisions, but I wouldn't let that keep me away from this book, even if it wasn't a holiday I celebrate.

Sally Melville in particular is known for thinking her way through a pattern, and that care shows here, even in the patterns that I'm not likely to knit myself any time soon. The book itself is a large-sized paperback, with good production values. The paper feels good. The Table of Contents and Index are well-stocked with detail. The photos are attractive and generally clear in detail.
