This may be Zoot's best., October 9, 2009
This review is from: Warm Tenor (Audio CD)
I get such joy from this recording from 1978. Zoot leads a swinging quartet of Jimmy Rowles, piano, George Mraz, bass and Mousey Alexander, drums. I'm sure you are all familiar with the first 3, but have you ever heard of Mousey? If not, be prepared for inspired drumming. In fact, if it were not for the superb bass and drum duo of George and Mousey, I would not rate this recording so highly. They add immeasurably to this group. Zoot and Jimmy put all their years of experience into interpreting these tunes, most of which are venerable standards. It is swinging, joyful jazz from all concerned.
2 notes:
1) get the 1977 recording "If I'm Lucky" with the same group. All of the above positive comments applies to " If I'm Lucky." See my review of "If I'm Lucky" on Amazon.
2) Track 2 is erroneously listed as "Old Devil Moon" when in fact it is " Old Devil Called Love."
See my review of the superb recording by the identical group called "If I'm Lucky."
