An incredibly useful guide that fits in your back pocket..., November 4, 2010
This review is from: Warman's Action Figures Field Guide: Values and Identification (Warman's Field Guides) (Paperback)
As the author of this book, I feel compelled to address some questions I've received about Warman's Action Figures Field Guide from collectors at conventions--and while bumping into them at collectible and secondary shops across the country.
Although this book was released YEARS ago (in September of 2006), the alphabetical lists of the toys included within this book (albeit NOT the prices...)--from "A" (Angel, Moore Action Collectibles) to "W" (World's Greatest Super Pirates, Mego)--are STILL GERMANE and RELEVANT when scouring bins, boxes, and tables at flea markets or garage sales. Although this book is by NO means a definitive guide to action figures--and does not claim to be--for a few bucks, the casual fan will be provided with an excellent overview of the hobby from 1964 (with the advent of the 12" G.I. Joe toy; the action figure that started it all!) to the present (which, at the time was 2006).
Think of this book as--essentially--a rough overview and initiation into the world of action figure collecting for the novice collector. However, I MUST remind you that for the "Big Four" toy lines (Star Wars [both vintage and modern], G.I. Joe [both 3 3/4" and 12"], Transformers, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe), the prices listed in this book have risen DRASTICALLY because of the recent success of these properties, due in large part to a few VERY successful movie tie-ins (Star Wars: The Clone Wars film [2008] and television program [2008-present], Transformers [2007], Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen [2009], and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra [2009]).
Apart from the prices, this is a VERY useful book for the uninitiated; good stocking stuffer, too...
