Book Description

September 26, 2007 Warman's
The book Costume Jewelry Figurals appeals to jewelry enthusiasts with tastes on both ends of the economic spectrum - from common pieces ranging in price from $2 -$20, and the most elusive items commanding $14,000+ at auction. Figural jewelry, a fashion-forward choice and popular item featured at top auction houses, represents possibly the most popular portion of the costume jewelry market.
Few pieces of jewelry make as big a statement as whimsical or beautiful costume jewelry figurals. Whether your jewelry passion is based on fashion or a collector's eye for detail, Warman's Costume Jewelry Figurals offers valuable tips on what to look for when buying figurals, up-and-coming designers to watch for, and secondary-market pricing to assess worth. Featuring more than 1,000 items and photos of jewelry figurals including people, dogs, flowers, faces, seahorses, Christmas trees and more. You'll find answers to all your questions, and inspiration in this must-have guide.

More About the Author

Kathy Flood is a journalist with a master's degree in the field from the University of Missouri - Columbia. She is currently a columnist and regular contributor to Antique Trader magazine. Another column was distributed nationally and abroad by The NY Times Syndicate and then ran for four years in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. Her column on antiques and collectibles was an exclusive for the Chicago Tribune. She is an appraiser and licensed auctioneer; author of THINGS (You can't take them with you but they're fun while you're here), a compilation of readers' favorite newspaper columns; Warman's Costume Jewelry Figurals; Warman's Jewelry 4th edition; Warman's Jewelry Field Guide 2nd edition; and a book covering unsigned Christmas tree pins, her gateway into jewelry after seeing 18 works of art in Vogue magazine. (Contact her at christmastreepins.com if you want to join a collector's society of holiday tree lovers.) Says Flood, "I just finished a Jewelry Face Book for Amazon, the title called Vintage Visages (see three of the brooches following author photo). If you collect autographed books, lmk and I'll sign mine for you. (The figural-pins book even comes with a free gift pin.) In the meantime on this page, enjoy the videos. They're short and sweet. Two are mine, created for the holiday season and its related jewelry. The third is Stuart Freeman's gripping split-second vid of the latest jewelry field guide, which is slightly chilling."

I knew this book would be good because the author is so knowledgeable about the stories behind the companies and designers. Her photos are great, with a large size that are perfect for checking out the detail in the jewelry. I have been a collector for over 20 years and yet I had never seen most of the pins in this book. The information and the jewelry are "fresh" and I really love this book. I can't recommend it highly enough, make sure you add it to your collection.

When I saw the picture on the cover of the Sterling Cleopatra brooch I knew this book was something special, I ordered it from Amazon and I was not disappointed. Well thought out, RESEARCHED information on jewelry pieces and companies, based on fact not author opinion, unusual brooches that wanted me to email the author and ask her where she shopped and did she need someone to hold her bags! Best of all? No cruddy 1990's yard sale items with over-inflated values.
This book truly was a breath of fresh air when it comes to the subject of costume jewelry, informative, to the point, and realistic! Kudos!
