5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best field guide I've ever seen
I love this book and recommend it to any collector of depression glass, especially if you are anovice. The thumbnail guides are easy to use and great for identifying just about any pattern. This has become my bible for identifying and valuing auction buys and yard sale finds. I hope Warmans considers another volume to acccomodate some of the patterns not covered in...

2.0 out of 5 stars What am I missing?
Apparently, a lot. This book makes me want to go out and buy a different one on the same subject. I can't seem to find anything in it that is useful. Either they left a lot out, or I am just looking in the wrong book. I see things on Ebay all the time that one would think would be in here but they are not. I've only identified one pattern so far. There are no toothpick...

5.0 out of 5 stars I use it all the time!!!, December 19, 2003

This review is from: Warman's Depression Glass Field Guide (Paperback)
I purchased this book about 3 months ago and have almost worn the cover off of it already. I like the thumbnails in the beginning of the book that help you quickly identify the pattern. Although the photos are in black and white, I feel that I am able to identify the patterns quite easily. It is also small enough to fit into my purse or coat pocket when I go to auctions. I think I am getting a much better grasp of various patterns by using this book. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a take-along book. I would also recommend having accesss to Warman's regular edition of Depression Glass for further reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Rely on These Values, September 6, 2007

This book is a fantastic take-along for going to antique stores and garage sales and the like. It contains several helpful sections to help you identify patterns including a catagorized section of borders (birds, floral, art deco, etc.) and a shape guide which is primarily useful when looking for plates and serving pieces. All of the photos of actual pieces are in color. This book also contains several patterns that Gene Florence's Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass does not.

One thing about this book that needs to be mentioned is the large discrepency in value for many pieces between the Warman's guide and Florence's guide. I don't know if this is because this edition is already 3 years old or what. You may feel like you are getting an incredible deal when you are actually not. This book also doesn't contain much information on each pattern except for the basics and it doesn't have much good information on reproductions.

This is a great field guide for glass, but it's good to have a back-up, more recent guide for values.

Either they left a lot out, or I am just looking in the wrong book. I see things on Ebay all the time that one would think would be in here but they are not. I've only identified one pattern so far. There are no toothpick holders or salt cellars. I'm more confused now than before. The pictures are dull and boring. I think a Field Guide in general is a bad idea because the size of the photos is so small. Sticking to the large books would have been better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warman's Depression Glass Field Guide-Values and Identification, February 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Excellent resource, with color photos for easier identification of the pieces. Have been able to find some pieces while at thrift shops, getting an incredible bargain. There are line drawings of the various patterns, as well as some examples in the different colors available. I was able to value the pieces in my collection, and some I was not even aware were antiques. This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in the Depression Glass trade, either finding for resale or simply collecting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Useful and Handy for a Beginner, January 15, 2011
When I got this guide, I knew nothing about identifying Depression Glass. I enjoyed reading the company timeline in the beginning of the guide to get my bearings. Then I flipped through the whole book until I found the pattern I was looking for. My two little pink containers with lids from my Grandmother were actually powder jars made in the Cube or Cubist Pattern by the Jeannette Glass Company. Overall, l thought the photo quality was bright and clear. I did think that certain patterns were hard to see like Adam and Cameo, but the real life examples I found had patterns just as subtle as the pictures. I prefer the bolder geometric designs to the daintier floral designs.

Armed with my guide I went antique shopping. I felt that I learned to recognize many patterns/colors/objects quickly and easily.(I had never heard of a nappy before!) Some were obviously overpriced according to the listing I had, but many were right at cost or cheaper. I love the apple green Windsor cup and saucer I got--delicious! However, I couldn't find the cheerful daisy and button pattern that several shops had on display in numerous colors anywhere in the book. My husband speculated that since it was a more elaborate design perhaps it wasn't strictly Depression Glass begun in the late 20's and early 30's. A well informed antique dealer told me the daisy and button pattern in sapphire blue that I bought was more likely made in the 40's or 50's by Anchor Hocking.

If the design you are trying to identify is more elaborate, and comes in a multitude of colors, you might have pressed glass or "elegant glass" of a later date. Some people use the term Depression Glass more loosely than this Warman's guide does.

The only thing I wish had been different is that the book had sections organized by company and then by patterns made by the specific company. Sometimes the antique shop would label a piece by the company name rather than by the pattern and then it was more of a puzzle since this guide was organized by pattern name.
