Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Hi, everyone. My book's been out for a year and I didn't even know this section was here. Isn't that pathetic? It's never too late, right? When I was writing the book, I was actually sick of hearing myself talk, blah blah blah, but with a bit of distance, even I kind of like this book all over again. What can I promise you? It won't bore you. You'll learn something or other. The jewelry is grand. Seeing it and blissing out over it is cheaper than actually buying it (but if you can snag it all, more power to you). I think the book is a most delicious holiday gift, with more eye candy and info than the average sweater. And if you know someone in trouble as far as this atrocious, stinking economy goes, this gift could open up a whole new world for them. Jewelry is a lark to buy and sell, and I don't mean just for scrap gold. Don't you know someone who'd be enormously helped by being able to buy a piece of jewelry for $3 and selling it for $60? Happens ... all ... the ... time. The $75 purchase sold for $1500 is less common, but occurs often enough not to be an aberration. I hope my book can be the start of a beautiful or continuing relationship between you or someone you know ... and the fabulous world of jewelry.

From the Inside Flap

There is no inside flap. Darn.
My publisher does seem to like to spell jewelry in the English form, though: jewellery. Blimey.

More About the Author

Kathy Flood is a journalist with a master's degree in the field from the University of Missouri - Columbia. She is currently a columnist and regular contributor to Antique Trader magazine. Another column was distributed nationally and abroad by The NY Times Syndicate and then ran for four years in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. Her column on antiques and collectibles was an exclusive for the Chicago Tribune. She is a licensed auctioneer and the author of THINGS (You can't take them with you but they're fun while you're here), a compilation of readers' favorite newspaper columns; Warman's Costume Jewelry Figurals; Warman's Jewelry 4th edition; Warman's Jewelry Field Guide 2nd edition; and a book covering unsigned Christmas tree pins, her gateway into jewelry after seeing 18 works of art in Vogue magazine. (Contact her at christmastreepins.com if you want to join a collector's society of holiday tree lovers.) Says Flood, "I just finished a Face Book for Amazon, a jewelry title called Vintage Visages (see the cover, and an example to the right of my photo, a brooch of carved Lucite). If you collect autographed books, lmk and I'll sign mine for you. (The figural-pins book even comes with a free gift pin.) In the meantime on this page, enjoy the videos. They're short and sweet. Two are mine, created for the holiday season and its related jewelry. The third is Stuart Freeman's gripping split-second vid of the latest jewelry field guide. It's kind of scary."

This book is probably one of the best guides I have ever seen for fine & costume jewelry. It can be used successfully by a beginning collector or the well seasoned collector as well. The photographs are stunning and add to the value of this research guide. The information regarding the different classes of items is extremely valuable. The book is interesting to read as well as use for reference. The author should be highly commended for this masterpiece. It will certainly become a favorite of mine in the years to come. It is hard to put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves jewelry.

The author, Kathy Flood, hits the groung running in Warman's 4th Edition. If you want good information, without the drag of non-fiction, you'll love this book. The categories are summarized first, so those wanting to get right to their speciality may. If you are like me, and want to curl up with the afgan for a good read, Kathy is the Agatha Christie of jewelry. You get to meet a cast of characters, like "The Pearl Doctor", learn facts you never dreamed of, like jade is from Burma and uncover secret beauties like "the fireball" pearl. Take a trip around the world; the price is right and with the pace of her writing, Kathy will get you home by supper time.
