if you are not familiar with Ian ,this is a good cd to begin with. It gives the listener a chance to here Ian in a solo/leader form, I have only heard other recordings where he is a featured soloist in a big band (Rob Mcconnell et al) setting. Very easy listening,good tunes, but not enough contrast, the entire cd somehow seems to be a extension of one song . All tune are performed well ,even without a full rythym section (you'll find out) . Just short of a great cd, but a good cd to introduce yourself to Ian Macdougall if you are not familiar with his playing.

There could be other descriptive words such as cool or bop which would both be descriptive of the style.

I'm surprised at the low sales rating (almost 431,000 on the list of best sellers) and I can only attribute that to the lack of recognition of the trombonist.......actually, underestimation of what I'm hearing on this cd. Ian McDougall must be one of Canada's best kept secrets! He is indeed a master of the instrument and has the chops that could compete with anyone. I have appreciated his talent for years in the Rob McConnell Boss Brass organization.

This offering is mellow but swinging with a nice repertoire. There are three originals, five standards and three jazz standards.....a great mix. The musicians are excellent and display a cohesiveness which can only be a result of truly listening to what's going on. I particularly enjoy the harmonization between trombone and guitar so evident from the first notes of the opener, "Warm".....a very pleasant sound which truly sets the tone. I also really dig "Blue Daniel", a composition by another great trombonist, Frank Rosolino.

Truly, if you like small groups, great jazz and musicianship and in particlar, excellent trombone......you can't go wrong on this one!

Ian McDougall is a premiere jazz trombonist. His new albums "Burning the House Down" and the 2 CD album "In a Sentimental Mood" - the Ian McDougall Quintet play Ellington & Strayhorn - is wonderful. Maybe hard to find, but keep looking or contact [...] for info.
