4.0 out of 5 stars Need narrower drywall?

2.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Chinese Drywall is Easier to Cut
I've cut narrow strips no problem. No problem, except I have to measure with a tape everytime I change size because the built in rule cuts narrow. I have found anything bigger than 3 inch doesn't cut all the way through. I'm cutting 1/2 inch and have the wheels set all the way in. The u shaped piece of metal bends and I have to use a razor. It makes a nice straight line...

I am not a drywaller, but have hung a fair number of sheets for residential construction. I and some other amateurs were drafted to help in finishing the second floor of a new church building framed for a nominal eight-foot ceiling height, requiring the trimming of an inch off a long edge of a number of sheets of 5/8 inch thick fire-rated drywall.

The long edges are thinner than the rest of the sheet, but there is an overlap of the surface paper, and fiber reinforcing in the fire-rated type, that makes it a little tougher. Alternatives are scoring both sides, and using a saw. Using this tool is faster, but still requires some manual persuasion to break off the strip. I would expect trimming half-inch or thinner non-rated would go faster.

This tool works just fine. Keep it level as you draw back and it will score perfectly. Works for 3/8 - 5/8 drywall.

This tool works great. It comes in very useful. My life is much easier now. Being a one person team, I spend less time on drywall with this tool.

It makes a nice straight line to cut along though. I guess I should have paid 3 times as much for the American stripper.

1.0 out of 5 stars Value Destroyer, January 15, 2012
This review is from: Warner Tool Drywall Edge Cutter No. 174W (Tools & Home Improvement)
Positioning the cutting wheels is an exercise in total frustration: need three hands. No indents for the three sizes, no secured bolts or nuts. Tightening the tiny bolts results in 'walking'. Loosen and try again. Finally, half way decent on 1/2" - forget 5/8" fire rated - found the end of the handle digs in to the drywall edge. The solution? Round off the edge! My solution: the garbage can. Result: cost of the tool plus 3 hours labor, down around $100.

This thing is pretty trick. For narrow cuts, it's perfect. I do drywall as a small part of my business, so for me it makes up for my lack of proficiency. It is well worth the price.

This is a great drywall tool for cutting off the tapered edge of a piece of drywall. This is the second one I have purchased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outside the Box trim, June 9, 2009
This review is from: Warner Tool Drywall Edge Cutter No. 174W (Tools & Home Improvement)
We have not used this tool a whole lot YET but plan too. I have used it to cut 4-1/2" strips of drywall to close in a doorway. The tool worked amazingly well. I set the cutting depth of the wheels, set the width of for the strips and pulled the tool down the length of drywall. With a quick snap of the drywall the 4-1/2" strip came off clean, clean enough I did not have to dress the sides before attachment.
The real reason I purchase this tool was to make faux trim for the house we are building. I want to custom build the wood trim for the house but we are running out of time with the bank. I plan on cutting drywall into uniform strip and tacking them onto the walls/doors/windows and painting like normal trim. Save money and will look nice until I get the wood trim cut and fitted.

3.0 out of 5 stars Drywall edge cutter, November 2, 2008
This review is from: Warner Tool Drywall Edge Cutter No. 174W (Tools & Home Improvement)
Good tool, a little cumbersome to adjust, but once done you can repeat the cuts easily. Great for those pieces around a window installation and to just trim off a sheet to length.

Good idea and I got limited sucess out of it. It was hard to adjust and too a little getting use to. If you are going to buy this then buy one for each thhickness sheetrock you will use, that will make it worth it.
