Book Description

March 1, 2005 Red Dress Ink Novels
So hip it hurts

Want to know what'll be hot next season? Just ask Mim Warner, the best coolhunter in the business. But Mim's latest trend predictions ("slut" T-shirts for eight-year-old girls? Samurai swords for ten-year-old boys?) are troubling, to say the least.

Fearing that Mim's about to be out like last season's Capri pants and worried about what she'll say next, her staff implements a Mim surveillance mission. With clients fleeing in droves and everyone around her in a tizzy, Meghan Resnick, Mim's protegee, seems to be the only one in control of all her faculties. But watching Mim lose her cool is loosening a few of Meghan's own screws. Suddenly she's not sure of anything-her career, her future, her ex-boyfriend, even her judgment. When Mim-watching leads to the scene of a murder-with Mim leaning over the dead body-Meghan can't help but wonder if her boss will be forecasting her next trend from Sing Sing.

An affectionate satire about the ins and outs of coolhunting, Mim Warner's Lost Her Coolmines the mysterious forces that make a trend come together-and a woman fall apart.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

From the author of Fashionistas—a very funny novel and soon-to-be film about the fashion magazine industry—comes this mildly entertaining novel about young Manhattanites in the cool industry. For Mim Warner and her staff at Pravda, "coolhunting" is a way of life: they predict and track teenage trends to help fashion companies develop and market their products. Pravda founder Mim is famed for her keen trend-sniffing ability, but when she begins making outrageous cool forecasts ("slut" T-shirts for third-graders; snuff pipes as accessories), her credibility and mental sanity are called into question. Meghan—an affable 20-something junior coolhunter, narrates, as she investigates Mim while dealing with her own widowed father, dramatic roommate, and sometime-boyfriend, writer Ian. Of these subplots, Meghan's relationship with Ian is the most detailed and layered: Ian's first book is a gritty urban crime story with—oops!—a Meghanesque villain ("he gave the symbol for the decline of Western civilization my face," she laments). Ian aside, however, Messina's novel struggles to find juicy subjects: the much-discussed subject of cool, for example, wears thin. A love story and a bizarre mystery develop during the second half of the book, though, and Messina's bouncy chick-lit style will keep the reader curious throughout, if not deeply concerned. (Mar.)

From Booklist

Meghan Resnick has the kind of job many young women dream about: she works for Mim Warner, a trend hunter who predicts what's going to be in fashion before the fad catches on. But lately Mim has been making some rather embarrassing missteps: she predicts teens will trade cigarettes for snuff and foresees the return of superhero-style capes. Mim's business partner and best friend, Helen, decides Mim has to be watched and cut off from the outside world before she runs their company, Pravda, into the ground. Meghan frets over being disloyal to her boss, but when she notices Mim paying visits to crime scenes, she realizes that Mim might have some very deep problems. Messina's third novel occasionally veers into the slickness that her previous offerings, Fashionistas (2003) and Tallulahland [BKL Ja 1 & 15 '04], managed to avoid, and the plot is thin at times, but hip young readers will marvel at Mim's offbeat antics and Meghan's attempts to curtail them. 5.0 out of 5 stars Breathe, September 7, 2005
This review is from: Mim Warner's Lost Her Cool (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
I had no idea she had a new book out and found Lynn Messina's new book while I was doing research on an article. Not only was I more ecstatic to do the article, but I was extremely happy that I could read her latest book. Lynn Messina has this dry sense of humor, sarcasm, romanticism, and professionally disgrunted characters to make any story good. This story is about a person who goes out to different spots to create trendsettings, but in the process she finds out her bosses have a few screws loose, her man friend is more complex than he appears, and book sales are deadly. I loved it! All the way to the last word. For some strange reason, it took me a minute to get into it, but when I did, I swallowed the story whole. Once again, I am pleased. Her characters are always going through the same dumb drama I'm going through--it's scary but fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, well-written, engaging, and just a bit creepy!, January 1, 2006

This review is from: Mim Warner's Lost Her Cool (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
Mim Warner's Lost Her Cool is not a typical "girl in the city" tale, despite the trendspotter premise. Messina mixes in a very odd group of characters to pull off a page-turner. Despite the title, Mim's not the main character - although she's certainly central to the plot. Mim runs a trendspotting firm and starts acting quite bizarrely. This forces those close to her to take extreme measures - but for one, Megan, things are more than just complex. Her dad is picking up women and singing in nightclubs to fill the void her mother's death has left, her ex-boyfriend Ian needs help promoting his new novel, her best friend chides Meg for using Ian. And then Ian's book starts showing up in very odd places. Definitely worth the read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, witty and full of wry observations, May 7, 2005
This review is from: Mim Warner's Lost Her Cool (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed Lynn Messina's Fashionistas, so I looked forward to reading another witty foray into the world of chic and I wasn't disappointed. She scratches entertainingly at the mystifyingly opaque surface of what makes a trend, while holding up a magnifying glass to the people who take it upon themselves to define "hip" while sliding ever towards the ugly obscurity that lies beyond the coveted 18-34 advertising demographic. The book was a funny, enjoyable and often thought provoking read. I look forward to seeing the upcoming movie of Fashionistas, and I think this could be a fun movie too. (I want to see those much-mentioned kids in Williamsburg wearing the glasses!)
